And I may need to go back to that chapter one more time, but it wasn't like Martin was incredibly detailed with each person's moves and how Oberyn was twirling the spear around like a baton. IIRC, that fight was at most 3 pages long.

It was a very quick fight in the books. Oberyn makes short work of him and then head smash happens. The only thing they left out, other than a one liner or two from Tyrion, was the kid in the crowd getting his arm cut off then the top of his skull removed. I don't get people acting like they didn't leave enough time in the show to cover everything.

got you, that makes sense. I just didn't consider Oberyn a huge character in the long run, but certainly was a major death the way you categorized it.

As of right now in the TV series, Oberyn's death means death for Tyrion as well. In the longer run, it leads to Prince Doran arresting the Sand Snakes so that they don't seek revenge, and Arianne Martell attempting to kidnap Myrcella so that she can have her crowned Queen of Westeros under Rhoynish law/tradition. In the process Gerold Dayne attempts to murder Myrcella so that Dorne would then be in open war with the Baratheons/Lannisters. So yes, Oberyn is out for nothing more than avenge the deaths of his sister, nephew and niece. However he is nothing more than a small part of the master plan that Doran has set in motion to align the Martells with the Targaryens to retake the Iron Throne.

You can add the death of Ser Arys Oakheart to the list as well.

Tyrian also would not have killed Tywin, Cersei wouldn't have burned the Tower of The Hand and Varys would still be the Master of Whispers.

Oberyn is the most major minor character if that makes sense. He was only in 1 book but he has a lot of fans. He's one of the fan favorite characters for sure.

thats exactly how I was trying to categorize him, just couldn't figure the right words. My reading experience makes me think that luckily he died before I could start to hate him.

After reading just a few lines about him in A Storm of Swords I knew that he'd be a fan favorite.

I will say that I was hugely disappointed when Martin killed off Oberyn and the graphic nature of the show's depiction of his death made me ill. He was and remains my favorite character in the books, just ahead of Doran Martell.

For one no Hodor will expect Uncat to be called lady stoneheart. You can post that in the Hodor thread and if no one hinted it was a spoiler they'd just be confused
