EXCLUSIVE: In a move that ought to make fans of The Beatles twist and shout, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes and his Neal Street Productions have set plans to make four separate theatrical films, one on each of the members of music’s most famous and enduring band.

Mendes will direct all four of the films, and this marks the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles – Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison – have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.

Mendes conceived this grand vision. He’ll tell interconnected stories, one from each band member’s point of view. This is perhaps the most ambitious project Deadline has revealed exclusively since our break that Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are teaming with SpaceX and NASA to shoot a narrative film in outer space. That complicated project is still on the launch pad at Universal, but plans are set here for SPE to finance and distribute worldwide with full theatrical windows in 2027. The dating cadence of the films will be revealed closer to the films’ release. I’m told they are locking down writers quickly.

Hard to follow things when you lose two of your key guys and try to have the junior sidekick take a bigger role.

no one talks about how all of the Beatles were white. I hope they find a way to include some diversity in this retelling.

I wonder if for the George Harrison movie it will have the trope of him coughing up blood into a handkerchief to allude to his eventual death from cancer.

Early thoughts on who will play who?

Lin-Manuel Miranda as Ringo
Idris Elba as John
Tig Notaro as Paul
Adam Driver as George

Paul
Ringo
George
John

Will be the order. They will want to start and end with one of Paul or John.

I don't know if I'm that excited about it, but I am all in for this. I can't get enough Beatles shite sometimes, and if they do this well it could actually be pretty cool.

I don't know how true that is, because he was pretty revered by fans worldwide. It does feel like for a while though, he was the "cool pick" as your favorite Beatle. He was talented, but he was still only the third-best songwriter in the band.

And that's not a slight to him at all, but L/M were just two of the best to ever do it. I never understood why George fans take it so personally in that regard. Sure, some of his best songs hold up to the best L/M songs, but as a whole his songs were a step below IMO.
