if he didn't, you might have mistaken it for a different Forrest Gump.

I enjoyed it, but that year was so loaded for great movies. I like Pulp Fiction more and I was totally in the bag for Shawshank. So, I liked it but didn't love it. Mainly due to other movies out.

May have been my third favorite of the year. Maybe.

Not saying it was bad. That was just a great year for movies.

ETA: Nevermind. After reviewing the list of films from that year, Gump was not top 3. Probably was top 10, though.

I could love it, but Gump's deficeincies were more glaring to me given the quality of film coming out at the time. I liked it, but I knew it wasn't great as I walked out. Because I had just seen some great movies.

it came out like 3 months before shawshank so you either waited til after shawshank to watch gump, or you just knew shawshank would be the shite.

this makes me think you cannot enjoy it for what its worth w/o having to weigh it against other movies. c'mon baloo, i know you're better than that

Seriously. I think it's the most overrated movie of the decade.

Forrest Gump was the best character of all time... Dude did so many great things in his life and really had no fricking clue what he was doing.

Kinda why I didn't like the movie

Forrest was a vehicle to revisit the time period but he wasn't a meaningful character... he just was just sleep walking through history

In a way, aren't we all? I think that's the point.

his character wasn't meaningful though

I couldn't empathize with him because his actions didn't matter (we already knew the history) and he didn't change or grow. He was just thrown into scene after scene which was of some historical interest... but unlike the people going through major events of that era - he never changed or really reacted in a human fashion to any of them

He was friendly and loyal - but so is a nice Labrador.

Of course I weigh art against previously experienced art. It would be silly not to. And I'm saying that 1994 has tons of great movies. I mean, the list of movies that came out that year is crazy good. Forrest Gump's weaknesses were more readily apparent in a year in which I was constantly exposed to really good movies. It's not even a conscious comparison, but when you see a decent movie after watch a bunch of crappy movies, it seems better than it i because you are so happy it's not another piece of crap.

I don't think Gump sucks, but I remember walking out with a real "meh" feeling. Nice way to spend two hours.

VERY few people actually saw "Shawshank" at the movies. I was surprised to see it get nominated at all (box office sales were much more of a factor back then for Oscars).

But I still think it was the most deserving film that year.

Shawshank was a nice little movie that wasn't really groundbreaking or creative though... it was pretty well acted tho

I don't see how anyone looks back and chooses anything other than Pulp Fiction - the proof of this is trying to make a top movies of the decade list... Pulp Fiction will always be on there

From what I've heard, it's one of the rare instances where the movie is significantly better than the book

Actually it's probably my favorite book.Don't know if that says something about the book or me.
Lots of changes from the book to the screneplay.Read it several years before. When I saw the 1st ad I couldn't believe a movie could be made from the book.Winston Groom has one Hell of an imagination.Great read.
