No spoilers past season 1.

I have almost started this show numerous times over the years after hearing almost literally nothing but praise for it on this board. I even watched the pilot several years ago before getting into another show and sort of abandoning The Americans.

Well I finally told myself I needed to get this done the other way, and watched S1 in a little over a week. I am 3 or 4 episodes into S2 right now and really liking it. It is VERY good.

I really love the early/mid 80s setting and the characters are solid. It is also well acted for the most part, although I sort of can't stand Noah Emmerich as Beeman (and I'm not sure why). But even he does a good job as an actor.

The story is pretty wild obviously, and you have to give a LOT of leeway to the fact that these people pull off some pretty major shite without law enforcement busting them. But it's a super interesting show, especially considering you know shite like that was very real during the Cold War with Russian implants pretending to be normal American citizens and fully ingrained in local communities.

It's funny that the majority of them infiltrating high-level security shite more or less revolves around one of them seducing someone.

What's weird is that I even buy skinny arse Keri Russell as sort of a badass who can kick men's' asses. But she and Rhys are great in this. I do find myself constantly laughing at their costumes since most of them are nothing more than "just put on glasses and a shitty wig."

Anyway, I know a lot of you here have watched it before. But if you have not, I'd recommend it immediately. It's very, very good.

You're still living in such a time, it's just a different country doing it in a slightly different setting.

Ah, so you've already been introduced to a new sexual position by now then.

Sure. I imagine it's just much more difficult to do these days with instant connectivity being ubiquitous. Back then when you had to sneak out to pay phones, plan scheduled drops, you couldn't look things up on the internet, etc. it would've been much easier to blend in, so to speak.

69 isn't a new sexual position.

But man that scene was rough.

Incredible show. There’s still some music I hear that triggers specific memories from the show.

Just fair warning, Season 5 slows down a bit and is maybe the weakest season. The push through is worth it.

You have to bear in mind when this is taking place. 81-87. Don't look at this within the lenses of current LEO capabilities, or even those of the 90s.

Most cops don't have computers and the internet doesn't exist yet. There is no email. Fax machines are rare and shite quality. No cell phones (there are car phones). While there is CCTV in some places, most security cameras are closed system/on site. Plus, DC metro (and other LEOs) aren't looking for spies, they're investigating crime.

Hence, the FBI CounterIntelligence Section - note the communication/tech limitations they have.

Plus, bear in mind the Jennings' cover. They're travel agents, so they will be away a lot AND will have direct access to ticketing w/ airlines.

It is not as far fetched as you think.

In a interview, Keri Russell said when they filmed that scene, people figured out they were involved with each other. According to her, some on the crew commented "yeah, they've fricked."

Well damn, I had no idea they were together. But that is pretty hilarious though.

I wonder why that scene specifically and not any of the other various sex scenes.

Did my thread help encourage you? I've thought numerous times about updating but figured noboyd would GAF.

I'm almost thorugh S4 now and still loving it. It continues to stay at a high level IMO. At this rate you'll catch up to me in about 2 weeks ha.

go ahead and make fun because I definitely deserve it, but when I was still very and I mean VERY early in the show, as in like 1 or 2 episodes into it, there were a couple times I didn't realize that a dude was Phillip in disguise I was just like "hey who's this new character"

When I first posted about beginning a first time watch that was one thing several people said that was a bit unbelievable. And yeah, she is a dainty little woman. But I mean, if she's had YEARS of high level training specifically for these kinds of purposes it's beleivable. It's not liek she's in a cage match where a man can just use brute strength. Often times she's got the upper hand on someone before a tussle even begins. That aspect has never taken me out of the show.

Not really anything in particular, just moreso the constant praise of the show any time it's brought up. So I guess your thread indirectly contributed to it.

For example, I knew:

...would be in here. I have seen him heap praise on it many times, even calling it his #1 show (as he said already).

It's just constant praise and I am not sure I've ever heard a bad thing about it. So I figured I would enjoy it, and I definitely am. I just always manage to fill my time with some other show. And for whatever reason, when I first watched the pilot several years ago, it didn't grab ahold of me or anything, and I just sort of started watching something else. But when I restarted it a week or so ago, I really liked it and have stuck with it. And now that I am almost 1.5 seasons in, I am in for the long haul and should be able to knock it out in a few weeks. I try to catch at least one episode a night, plus more if I can. Really just depends on what other shite I have recorded that I need to catch up on.

That's the thing, sometimes their costumes are pretty good. And sometimes they just put on glasses and roll.

It is, and I basically already covered your points about the time period a few posts above yours.

But it's all good and I am fine with it though. I realize that there is some suspension of belief, and that's cool. And at least the show tries to cover its own arse with offhand comments like "I wiped the vehicle for prints' and stuff like that. So it is at least plausible as far as reasons they aren't caught.

They've been married since the show. They were both either married to other people at the time. They have kids and everything I think
