Films/Shows that have not encouraged Tourism: Hostel/Slovakia, True Detective/Erath, LA

There are films/shows like Chernobyl that cause viewers to be curious about visiting and learning more about the place or people.

Then there are films like Hostel (Slovakia), True Detective (Erath, LA), Man on Fire (Mexico City), Taken (Albania) that paint destinations with broad strokes in a less than flattering way.

What are some movie/shows that after watching made you set aside a place as a must not visit?

A Serbian Film.
Borat.

And I somehow never bothered learning that True Detective was set in Erath. May have to do an HBO Max subscription to finally watch it.

It really is a shame because Erath was such a hotbed of tourism before.

Did True Detective really change the number of visitors to Erath in a year? From what 10 to 7?

True Detective isn't set in in Erath. That is just where they find the first victim. It's set all over the La gulf coast area. But I see the point.

I must say, 15 year old me watching Hostel had no desire to go to Slovakia any time soon.

Come on. Tourists weren’t coming to Erath regardless of True Detective

Narcos - Juarez, Guadalajara, Tijuana. Not that I was going there before the show but I’m really not going there now.

My wife did missionary work in K’Stan and hated every second of it. Almaty had some culture but outside of that it was a spiritually dead and bleak country.

First time she ever left the country or flew on a plane and it was to there.
