Surely they would begin to question if maybe he could be. I don’t think they would think that Galactus would want the baby for no reason. No they didn’t know for sure, but if they weren’t starting to question it, then that would be surprising to me.

But it still goes back to the other point. I’m not trusting Galactus on any deals. Nor would I trust Ultron, or Thanos, etc. You fight. Like they did.

Starting to fall a little behind superman. This is just for domestic. If it does low 30s today, there's gonna be a lot of concern in Marvel headquarters. Not a good sign for legs.

I enjoyed it overall. My only small nitpicky things were how old the baby looked compared to the short amount of time he was alive (I sorta get it, it's tougher to get an actual newborn in a movie).

The other thing was how unbelievable it was that they could coordinate and build all these transportation bridges across the world in such a short amount of time. It seemed like it was just a matter of days in the movie timeline before Galactus arrived, but realistically it would have taken several months if not years to accomplish all of that.

I mean, they’re probably going to give the MCU a break after Secret Wars anyway

But also, there’s not a lot of faith in the F4 brand right now. Not that surprised at the numbers

I think the age of the baby provided context as to how much time went by before Galactus arrived.

You're two gripes kind of work each other out.

Looks like it's opening between 4-5m in China not that far off F1. Comic book movies are DOA there, OS projections are killing them this summer.

Either budgets must come down or they need to figure out why places like China hate these movies

Brutal...but almost everything is DOA in China right now. Everything except for dinosaurs.

Comic book films were very popular in China. Endgame is the only American made film in China's top 10 box office. I just think they're over the genre. I also think there's some anti-american sentiment in China right now.

Yeah CBM had trended downward for a little while now, but this year it's been an absolute cliff.

Movie studios probably don't have the luxury to ignore the second biggest market, unless budgets in the future are smaller

No, not at all. Reed said it would take the surfer a month to get out of the black hole. Galactus had to wait for her to return in order to begin the journey. So a month+ at minimum, not days.

Opening wknd turnout for #FantasticFour    was highly frontloaded. Opening day FRI incl pre-shows so SAT always falls for franchise tentpoles. But FF was higher than usual.

Look at some recent FRI-SAT July superhero drops:

-33% | #Superman
-36% | Deadpool & Wolverine
-40% | Thor 4
-42% | #FantasticFourFirstSteps

I know that this is the current Hollywood practice for first weekend box office reporting, but it will never not annoy me.

The movie made $33 million friday and $33 million Saturday. Strong preview screenings Thursday got the movie over its final tracking numbers of $100-100 million. FF could also hold stronger today and get to $120.

He's just pointing out there's some frontloading. It's preview number was 2 mil higher than Superman, but it could potentially open 7 mil lower. There's a long way to go but it's likely going to have standard legs (2.5-2.6 multiplier) while Superman could be over 3.0

Marvel will be fine. It’s gonna be a lot of buildup for Doomsday.

But yeah, it just doesn’t feel like it used to.

In my opinion, this one doesn’t have the wow surprise factor that Superman had. With Superman you had a lot of word-of-mouth. People leaving saying oh my God they finally made a good Superman movie. Which is why I kind of continued on a run.

This movie was good. I don’t think it’s much better than thunderbolts in my opinion. It’s a good serviceable Marvel movie. But there was no wow factor. I don’t think it took as many risks as Superman and I don’t think it has the wow factor Superman does. The past two Marvel movies have been really good compared to what we have seen. So that’s a good thing. Doomsday will have that wow factor.

Ok I have several points that nobody has made yet surprisingly.

1. Criminal they didn't have blind Alicia as Ben Grimms love interest. The fact she's blind brings out so many emotions in Ben's reaction to the fact she loves him and his own state. To be replaced by a non-blind teacher at a Jewish temple?? cmon. Reboot that whole storyline.

2. NOBODY mentioned Stingray as mole man? perfect role and way to introduce that campy villain in a way that actually worked. I'm still cracking up they used that character.

3. Agree Galactus was too easily defeated towards the end. He fought the entire Avengers team including FF4 in the comics and it felt a little game-of-thrones to have an angry Invisible Girl able to push him halfway across the city by herself. You don't devour planets to have a single superhero push you around like that.

4. Not a fan of the female silver surfer but I have to admit that love interest angle with Johnny wasn't bad and it provided a better motivation for the herald to turn against Galactus. I'm not hating.

5. Almost zero use of Reed stretching. Wtf. Again, Incredibles showed how it's done. This was weak.

6. Didn't care for the timing of showing Galactus passing Mars then Reed rallying the entire world to build dozens of teleportation devices in time for his arrival at Earth. I feel the writers should have had Galactus much further out when this process started and a scene showing how the surfer got away from the black hole before returning. Felt rushed.

It’s been brought up about the fact that they didn’t use their powers much. You basically had some montages and the end.

And I agree about the pacing. Kind of goes back to the montage thing. There was a lot of montage in this movie lol.

Mole Man was great and I wish there was more of him. He had the funniest scene in the movie

Probably my favorite aspect in the movie was the trip they took in space. I thought it was really cool cool how they did that. It kind of had a classic feel. The take off, etc. It wasn’t just like guardians of the Galaxy where they jump in a spaceship and go into space. It was more grounded in reality so to speak.

I'm not getting into the whole woke argument because we finally got a decent FF movie so as a huge fan I'm grateful for that.

The introduction of Galactus in space was incredible. They killed it.

Eta agree about the space sequence. Very well done. At first I thought they were going to end up on the Earth with the Thunderbolts when they were trying to get away from that black hole.

That would have been a fun scene to have before they returned to their Earth to fight Galactus.
