I also don't know about transferring HIV to the fetus, but it's far from a definite that Forrest Sr would have contracted it.
She could have also gotten clean for the pregnancy and relapsed...or just hooked up with an old boyfriend who had it years down the road.
How long does it take (or did it take) for HIV to show up? I would think it's a bit quicker than 4 or 5 years...the age I think little Forrest was when we found out about him and Jenny being sick.

I think the movie is supposed to signify that we're all a little "disabled". Jenny was running from her demons and her past abuses and it led her into drug addiction and eventually a deadly disease. Forrest who was mentally disabled and not expected to amount to much, had amazing encounters and saw the world as a war hero, ping pong champion and successful business man. All the while, all he ever wanted was for Jenny to love him back.
He lived the fuller, more enriching life, but he wouldn't have had any of that, possibly, if it wasn't for Jenny pushing him away all those years and into those experiences.

If I remember correctly he was the coach of an all women's baseball team... but then he got hit in the head with a foul ball and stayed in coma for about a year dreaming he was a toy cowboy

Definitely one of my favorite movies ever 
Last summer when we went on a family trip to Universal, we ate at the Bubba Gump restaurant there one night. Our waiter kept trying to stump us with FG trivia but we were getting them all right I forgot the one he finally got us with, though...I think it was the names of both the hookers and we could only remember one.

When he woke up he was a Corrections Officer on Death Row near a mountain (WTF?) in Louisiana but later became a Texas Congressmen giving Stinger missles to the mujahideen in Afghanistan.
