It is in striking distance and it may top it. I just hate the dumb arse argument/quest on highest grossing when single tickets can be up to $20 each now.
Avatar was more important in cinema history than Endgame, but Endgame was a much better movie.

I still have not seen the whole movie It bored me, but I acknowledge what an amazing box office run it had. It's a stand alone film. Endgame is the 22nd MCU film. What Avatar did is far more impressive, IMO. And it will get the record back in 2 years.

Was it though?
Endgame is literally the culmination of 22 movies. An arc never ever seen before.

Never seen before??? 20 something below average movies where all that happens is one guy dies at the end is supposed to be something amazing and noteworthy

This is my go to list. They can only calculate inflation for Domestic though. Endgame has not even cracked top 15 and neither will ever touch SW or GWTW.
Must be nice to be a movie and have no competition for a whole year. Endgame reached $2 billion in like 11 days with today's competition. Avatar did it in 47. GWTW is impressive as hell as is OG Star Wars but that was during a time when movies weren't the business they are today. Regardless, they are all impressive records.

Ok but a large majority of Avatar's tickets were 3D not to mention it was in theaters for far longer

Avatar has been accused of being a rip off of: Pochantas, Ferngully, Dances with Wolves, and several novels, but let’s take a look at the 14 movies ahead of it on that domestic ticket sales list:
1. Gone with the Wind was first a novel, so not an original IP.
2. I’ll address all the Star Wars movies at once.
3. The Sound of Music movie is an adaptation of a play which itself was based on memoirs. Not an original IP.
4. E-T. I’ll credit it as an original IP, even though it was basically a rehashed version of another script.
5. Titanic was, well you know what, not an original IP.
6. The Ten Commandments, not an original IP.
7. Jaws was a novel first. Not an original IP.
8. Doctor Zhivago was based on a novel. Not an original IP.
9. The Exorcist was based on a novel. Not an original IP.
10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is based on a fairy tale. Not an original IP.
11. See Number 2.
12. 101 Dalmatians is based on a novel. Not an original IP.
13. See Number 2.
14. Ben-Hur is not an original IP.
So 10 of the 14 ahead of it were based on novels or real events/people. ET is the only true original IP on that list because any original Star Wars fan will tell you that when it came out it had its obvious callbacks and inspiration from Stagecoach, Hidden Fortress, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and a litany of other movies/tv shows. Basically, everything you can say about Avatar, can and has been said about Star Wars and that was before the end of 1977 (and 80, 83, and 99).
So if you are going to shite on Avatar for making a shitload of money while being unoriginal, then keep in mind that only one movie in history that has made more money domestically than it was an original idea, and that was a movie with an alien eating Reese’s Pieces.

There is no case to be made as to why Avatar deserves to be multi film franchise with four more movies when the first one was a rip off of an animated film and it has such a terrible story and plot line.
It could be a movie about watching paint dry... if it makes $2.8 billion then it’s getting a sequel.

I’m not upset or anything just baffled at the ignorance marvel fans keep spewing

Literally all it has going for it is that it's pretty to look at.
You could also say the exact same about every Avengers/Marvel movie. They're cool visual movies and that's it. The source materiel is completely unoriginal.

In 20 films only thing marvel has done that’s was visually nice was endgame final battle and Thor final battle

It made $2.788 billion in theaters and at least $400 million more on home video. LINK
Sorry you didn't like it but that's too bad so sad for you. The sequels will make bank.

Avatar is trash, took way too long for another movie to pass it up. I’ll take it though.

Avatar is still (I think) the largest IMAX showing ever. I'm sure the 3D uncharge created a much higher box office amount as well.
To me, the visuals are the big catch - so, I haven't seen it since I bought it in 3D a few years ago. I tried to watch it once when it was on regular TV and it really didn't have the same feel, so I gave up on it.
My TV is 3D capable, as well as my disc player - maybe I should dust off the 3D glasses and give it a go again.

You don’t see why a studio would make a sequel to the first movie to pass 2 billion worldwide? That doesn’t show demand?
That’s not what I said. I said 4 sequels. That’s insane. Has any movie been slated for 4 sequels that haven’t even been put out yet? Even the MCU didn’t have a timeline like that. On top of that yes Avatar was wildly popular but I’m pretty sure everyone knows it was mostly for its ground breaking filmmaking methods and use of Real 3D. I’m sure Avatar 2 will do quite well but how do they possibly have enough story for 3 more after that?

Avengers endgame is the record holder for IMAX and it really not that close.

And they will never make an Avatar sequel
I hope they do and I hope Cameron leverages that with Disney to make the Alita sequels.
