Honestly Disney might be targeting China for Avatar this time anyways. If it plays like the original Avatar we might be talking about the biggest release in a single territory ever.

Avatar made 1.34 billion Yuan, but was pulled early because the Chinese government thought it could cause a revolt. This was when China only had 5000 theaters and allowed foreign films to run 10 days.

For comparison endgame ran for the typical month in China and it made 4.23 billion Yuan in 66,000 theaters

Chinese theater counts

18 and 20 on the list can’t be right.

According to it, Jurassic Park was released in 1993 and made $402.8 million

The Lion King is release the next year and made $422.8 million. So it made $20 million more just a year later

But after those numbers are adjusted for inflation, somehow Jurassic Park makes $22.5 million more?

That’s a hellva swing over a single year

Endgame is literally the culmination of 22 movies. An arc never ever seen before.

Agreed. I remember thinking they were high with the original Avengers movie, which seems simply quant from today. They had this impossible vision back in 2005. People mocked Marvel saying "Well, you can't do all of the superheroes." And they made a huge fricking gamble by casting RDJ as the protagonist given his troubled past. It is one of the great redemption stories in all of movie making history. 22 films accumulating into this. No, Endgame is a more important film and a better film than Avatar.

I find the ending of Avatar to be appalling. I don't blame the Na'vi for what they do because they don't know to what extent that humans are actually capable. Jake and the other humans know this. All he's done is buy the Na'vi maybe 15 years, the humans return, and simply nuke that fricking tree from orbit, and they're fricked. The ending should have been more Princess Mononoke where humanity and nature come to some sort of understanding of mutually ensured destruction. But nope, we can't come to some sort of compromise because humanity is innately evil, so now leave. Instead of being a diplomat, Jake has basically signed the Na'vi's death warrant.

Has any movie been slated for 4 sequels that haven’t even been put out yet?

Yes. How to Train your Dragon was originally going to be a 6 part series, same with The Amazing Spider-Man. King Arthur that was released a couple of years ago was to be the start of anywhere from a 5 to 8 movie set, depending on what source you believe.

And we’re ignoring the obvious one: Star Wars. George has said anywhere from 6 to 9 to 12 to 15 were his plan, depending on the time he was asked. James Cameron has had Avatar on his mind since the mid-90s. This is his magnum opus.

It's off to an incredibly shitty start if it is.

Speedy, the reason why the grosses for Lion King 94 and Jurassic Park are different is because Lion King has 3 different releases: $312 million in the original 94 release, $16 million in the 2002 IMAX release, and $94 million in the 2011 3D release.

Jurassic Park grossed $357 million in 93 and $45 million in its 2013 3D release.

Hope that clears it all up.

Yeah, it's not close to Avatar if you adjust for inflation.

Endgame sold more tickets though.

The real question now is will Jeopardy let James Holzhauer back on to pass Ken Jennings?

And..:back then those movies were theaters for years. Just stop.

Gone with the Wind was released in 1939 and its initial run lasted until 1943.

Yes, because wrapping up 22 movies is not that big of a deal. It did not change cinema forever.

The 22 movie arc is just a larger execution of what has been done before. It is something TV shows do every year, just with a larger budget and longer run times.

Agreed. Comparing movies released now when you can just buy them 6 months after they are released to ones released back in the day when if you didn't see it during the initial odds were you would never have a chance to see it again is silly.

Alita was way more interesting than Avatar. I’d like to see that sequel.
