Avatar? I still think the impact of that film on film itself has been rather light. The Hangover had more of an impact, as more films scrambled to copy that.

A lot of people forget that 3D movies were a gimmick with red and blue colored glasses before Avatar. 3D movies were tinted in red and blush and just a few scenes where something would jump out at you into your face. Avatar made 3D movies what they are today. Avatar in 3D was a beautiful movie and incredible and not just random gimmick shots, but the entire movie was sculpted and made for 3D

Two things on this though:

1) THe technology that was used to shoot Avatar was never really used outside of 3 or 4 films. Therefore, not influential.

2) Even 3D as a fad has mostly died. So it lasted less than 10 years. It was probably dead after 6 and people just kept it around to keep ticket prices high.

Many small town theaters do exactly this.

They intentionally only allow certain timeslots to be 3D. And the movies only have maybe 2 scenes that are 3D.

year...their choice...my thoughts

1989 - Batman? - Last Crusade was better
1990 - Goodfellas - good choice on that one
1991 - Terminator 2? - I'd say Silence of the Lambs was more definitive
1992 - Reservoir Dogs - Excellent movie, but I'd choose Unforgiven
1993 - Jurassic Park - Good movie, but Schindler's List would be more iconic. Also Dazed and Confused and Tombstone...that was a helluva year for movies
1994 - The Shawshank Redemption - Excellent Choice...would also consider Forrest Gump
1995 - Toy Story - Good Choice...Braveheart and The Usual Suspects would be close
1996 - Scream - Are you freaking kidding me??? - Slingblade, Fargo and Independence Day and they picked Scream???
1997 - Titanic - Yep...Good Will Hunting close behind
1998 - Blade - What is this guy smoking...Blade over Saving Private Ryan, The Truman Show and The Big Lebowski???
1999 - The Matrix - Yeah...I'll buy that.
2000 - American Psycho - Good movie...but not over Gladiator and Castaway
2001 - The Fellowship of the Rings - I'll buy that one, too
2002 - Spirited Away??? - F-that. I'd take The Two Towers, Minority Report or Signs over that crap
2003 - Lost in Translation - Nope...I'm taking Kill Bill Vol. 1
2004 - Shaun of the Dead - love the movie...but I'd take Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind over it...loved them both
2005 - Brokeback Mountain??? - OK...that explains a lot. No way I'm taking the gay cowboy picture over Walk the Line or Batman Begins
2006 - Pan's Labyrinth - The Departed in a landslide...
2007 - No Country for Old Men - Well...he finally got one right again
2008 - The Dark Night - Meh...I'll take it...could have also gone with Slumdog Millionaire
2009 - Avatar - This guy is an avatard...I'm taking Inglourious Bastards.
2010 - Inception - Well...he's back on track again...good choice
2011 - Bridesmaids - Holy F***. Pretty weak year for movies...but I'm taking Moneyball.
2012 - Avengers Assemble - Argo...all day long over this. I'd put Skyfall and The Life of Pi over it, too.
2013 - Gravity - I'd take American Hustle or The Wolf of Wall Street over this.
2014 - Birdman - Nope...I'm taking Guardians of the Galaxy or Interstellar over it.
2015 - Mad Max Fury Road - Nope (even though I hate going against a Mad Max movie) - The Martian or The Revenant would be my picks ahead of it.
2016 - Moonlight - I refuse to pick anything in this crappiest year of movies
2017 - Get Out - He needs to get the f-out...I'm taking Dunkirk
2018 - Black Panther - mmmm...no. I'm taking Infinity War and First Man ahead of it.

That's it...my manifesto of crap this guy got wrong.

Multiple people not understanding the impact Scream had. And it looks like you just picked movies you thought were better, which is not the point of the list

Slingblade? I’d bet many casual movie watchers have never seen it or even heard of it

I agree but Last Crusade doesn't really fit the criteria they laid out. Batman really does

Which films made the biggest impact on release? Which still endure today? Which gave us the most eye-popping spectacle? The most iconic characters? The greatest dialogue?

I also never realized it, but 1989 was a more influential that i would have thought.

We've mentioned Batman, Do the Right Thing and the Little Mermaid. Let me throw out 2 others.

When Harry Met Sally : I think this really revitalized the "rom-com" it was also the first big hit for Rob Reiner, Nora Ephron and Castle Rock.

sex, lies and videotape: maybe not the first or the biggest but certainly a early indie film that was recognized by the mainstream. Bonus points for featuring the late, great Bayou on Chimes Street.
