If we didn't need another reason to nitpick...

Feminist Odyssey translator slams Christopher Nolan's movie for being too woke

If you don't know who this person is...

Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey is rumoured to have influenced Christopher Nolan's movie.

Irony

Emily Wilson's translation is woke beyond words. She stripped it down to nothing, filters it through a postmodern feminist lens, and barely hides her disdain for Odysseus and masculinity and his glory seeking

Her primary complaint is that Nolan focuses on his shame and guilt, and filters the film through an overtly Christian lens instead of a pagan one.

Her real beef is that Nolan’s version of The Odyssey isn’t historically accurate.

Its pretty specifically noted at this point that Nolan overtly brings in Christian themes and feelings into Odysseus that are not there in the text, which is a very big beef for her

She says we never get to see him be a warrior. WTF is she talking about?

He wrecks shop everywhere he goes basically. He either uses cunning and deception like with the Circe or the cyclops and then he absolutely wrecks shop at the end with the suitors?

I could easily make the argument that this film was right wing as frick, one of the more right wing big budget releases of the last decade

You'll never get these people that haven't seen the movie and were just whipped into a frenzy by moron clickbait grifters

Dude, this is dumb. There is no feminism in her translation. Odysseus is is guided by glory and honor. What disdain are you talking about?

The only thing new and different in her translation, relative to other modern, popular translations, is the focus on lines. She doesn't strip it down to nothing. She maintains the same amount of lines as in the Homerian Greek. She does this instead of artificially elevating the language. This does affect word choice, as she doesn't use the most literal translation of a word if it requires too many English words. Conversely, some of what she translates is closer to the greek. Many previous translations have dressed up servant titles when the original Greek word was just "slave."

This shite is so easy to Google. You could also very easily read the translation and find this out for yourself. There is no criticism of Odysseus. At all. The female characters are not given extra time, exposure, or sympathy.

Yeah. Nolan invented the guilt and shame, not just the lens. She wants the big adaptation to be closer to the original that she has studied her whole life. The original would not work very well as a modern (as in the past 100 years) movie, as Odysseus is not a modern hero.

A story about one kingdom being destroyed because of a woman and another kingdom on the brink of collapse because it doesn’t have a man to run it

Very woke

You didn’t watch the movie, Helen was absolved, the war had nothing to do with her in the movie.

You are an idiot that clearly didn’t see it

She quite literally apologized at the end for all the pain SHE CAUSED

Verbatim

If any human being thinks there is a single woke theme in this movie they shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Point blank

LOL

It most certainly does mix it in, and there has been a lot written on it.

One such example is that while some of the female slaves that slept with the suitors in other translations were referred to as "whores" or "sluts"...she simply calls them "girls".

In her forward she refers, repeatedly, to other translations as "misogynistic"

There's a lot I could say about it.

You are wrong. She hasn't exactly been shy about talking about it at all either

If they had seen the movie they would see:

The black lady is cast as the two worst wives in history. One of them abandoned her husband for another dude and started a war that killed thousands and destroyed a civilization. The other murdered her husband

The other part is that of a weak, ineffectual teen that the greeks thought of as useless and completely disposable, so he gets killed in the first 30 seconds. He unwittingly helps them open the gates for a dark force to destroy civilization. Nolan wrote this and thought "I know the perfect person for this. A 40 year old twink"

Nolan then imposes overtly Christian/Catholic themes on the pagan tale, in particular on the lead character, who is so overcome by shame and guilt over breaking the Golden Rule, that he gives up his worldly titles and seeks absolution out in the world

Based as frick

lol Agamemnon is explicitly said to have started the war over trade routes. You didn’t watch, it’s ok and Helen apologized for what happened “in her name” meaning other people used her, it’s not really her fault.

Helen gave Agamemnon the ability to pursue the war. That’s extremely clear in this movie and every version of the Iliad/odyssey. Without Helen being a filthy whore there is no war

The central theme of this movie wad about a man’s journey to return home to save his kingdom because it is going to hell without a MAN to rule it

The same thing is implied in Troy.

Its long been a historical theory. Its not something Nolan invented out of thin air
