Watched the first 2 eps last night. It’s been about 3 years since I read the book so it’s a little hazy but it seems like they’re sticking true to it. It’s been great so far.

Sure, if you want an adaptation that skips the first 3/4ths of the book and cuts out the best character.

I’m at the same point. If their goal was to make Cathy a sympathetic character, they have done a terrible job so far. Looking forward to the arrival in the Salinas Valley and the introduction of Lee.

I’m only three episodes in and she is just as monstrous as she was portrayed in the novel.

I couldn’t be happier with the portrayals of Sam Hamilton and Lee so far.

I’m through 5 eps and have enjoyed it. Doesn’t seem at all like they’ve tried to make you sympathize with Cathy/Kate. I guess we could still see that at the end when she dies, but they’ve clearly painted her as a monster thus far.

I do wish they included more of Sam’s family and backstory.

**Spoilers next 2 posts for non-book readers**

Finished it last night. I really enjoyed it and think they did a good job staying true to the book, especially with how they accelerated the timeline to fit it into 7 eps.

I think Florence Pugh did a fantastic job. I wouldn’t say she makes you feel bad for Cathy, but she does have a reckoning at the end with her destructive life. I won’t spoil it, but they did take some artistic liberty the last two eps with Kate’s spiraling and psychosis. Considering how she kills herself, it was fine and I read just now that it ties into something from the book.

I still wish they had more of the Hamilton family story line.

I haven't started watching yet, but it sounds like Flrence Pugh plays Cathy pretty true to how she's written in the novel, which is great news. I was concerned that they'd tried to turn her into some sort of misunderstood anti-hero whose bad behaviour was a result of her being abused by men.

Cathy is one of the great literary antagonists. She is a sociopath with zero redeeming qualities.

Doesn't the candy scene imply that Cathy was sexually abused as a little girl?

I've only seen the first two episodes, but now I'm going to have this question nagging at me for the rest of the series. If Cathy's evil isn't innate, then why would Caleb be worried that he's inherited her "bad blood"? If Cathy became the way she is because of what happened to her, what exactly is Cal afraid he's inherited from her?
