Was Julie Harris Cathy in the 1955 movie? She seemed like a good person in the movie.

Hoon Lee was cast. Outside of Pugh as Cathy, he's probably my favorite casting. Seem's like he's going to be a big part of the show.

Job in the house.

If you know, you know.

No. Julie Harris was Abra. Jo Van Fleet was Cathy.

Ohhhhh. Cathy was the boys' mother. Ok. Abra had a much bigger role than her in the 1955 movie.

Yes. The 1955 version only adapted the latter part of the novel. Cathy had already given birth to the boys and abandoned the family. Her role in the film is actually pretty small. The 1981 television miniseries was a much more faithful adaptation of the source novel. Jane Seymour was excellent as Cathy.

As I said in a previous post, I’ll reserve judgement until after I watch this new version. Telling the story from Cathy’s POV is risky because she is the novel’s antagonist. It appears that they are going to try to explain her justification for the horrible things she does. If the goal is to make viewers understand her, but not necessarily like her, it might work.

Anyone expecting anything but “subverted expectations” when Netflix or Amazon adapts one of their favorite IPs should prepare their anus.

No thanks. Such a shame because East of Eden is one of my all time favorite novels. I guess they feel the need to "modernize" it by making Cathy a more sympathetic character.

It's interesting to hear her say that when the second trailer seems to make it very clear that she is evil and a monster. Villains can be sympathetic when there is a method to their madness, but Cathy was a sociopath who destroyed the lives of everyone she touched. There was nothing good in her. If they make her the "heroine" of the story, they will disgrace the source material. Now, if the goal is to make her understandable, but not necessarily likeable, it might be ok.

Yea the trailer gave me some hope and looked good. Plus the interviews I read of the showrunners all were pretty positive and she mentioned wanting to do a faithful adaption. But that Florence Pugh interview is worrisome to say the least.

But maybe you're right and it's just making her understandable and not likeable. But my expectations have certainly dropped. Either way, we'll find out soon enough, just a week or so until release.

Reviews are promising so far. Lots of praise for Pugh and Lee. It’s up to 27 reviews and still at 89%

Absolutely.

We watched 4 episodes last night. Couldn't turn it off after our daughter went to bed. It only continues to paint her in such a light.

Thank God. I was worried they would make her a sympathetic character, which she absolutely is not.
