It appears that 6 books total were written....

Did the original movie in 1984 cover the storylines of all 6 books or was it just the events of the first book "Dune"?

What will the reboot cover??

TIA

probably gonna read the first book soon.

It's been a while since I saw it, but I've only read the first book and I believe I remember the movie only encompassing that one book.

It covers just book 1 which has its own “books” within itself. Way too much for one movie.

The original movie covers the first book. As in most cases, the book is way better than the movie (I like the movie).

I think I made it through the 4th book. I don't have anything to read right now and may circle back to this.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I like books 4-6 more than books 1-3. The only problem is the story isn’t tidied up with Herbert’s death. The books can end at 6 well enough. However, his son finished the last book in two parts using Frank Herbert’s outline, but it’s so painfully obvious he does not have the same talent that his dad had.

I’d put books 4-6 up against any books in the sci fi/fantasy genre.

None of them are as good as book 1, but I'd agree books 5 and 6 are better than the rest of the series.

4 is my least favorite, though I know some people like it the best of the series.

Book 5 is somewhat disjointed. Doesn't mesh well w 4 and 6. Doesn't really explain what happened between 4 and 5 or why.

Then there is the sudden preoccupation w sex that came out of left field.

6 turned into a Season 8 where character histories were abandoned and little made sense.

The movies being filmed will just cover the first book.
That book is a monster of world-building just by itself.
But, very well thought out, all encompassing, and rich.

The current movie will be split into two. Gotta maximize those profits...
But there is more than enough material for even three movies if they chose to. Unlike the Hobbit.

As others said, the movie covers only the first book. A lot of artistic license was taken with the Lynch movie. I hope this new movie is more true to the source material, but there is a lot going in that book that just doesn't transfer over to film. A lot of exposition, a lot of inner monologue, and a lot of the action is only referenced.

The original series was 6 books. The author, Frank Herbert, died before finishing the series. The last book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Frank's son, Brian, decided to finish the series based on notes he claimed he found in a safety deposit box somewhere. He royally fricked it up.

I love the original books. If you liked the movie/tv series, give the books a try.

DUNE the Lynch movie is fun time even with all the executive mettling. But it is not DUNE.

The first 4 books are fantastic and tell a complete story. SyFy way back did a good miniseries covering the first 3.

Books 5 and 6 are also great but they have no conclusion.

Later on his son Brian and Kevin J Anderson (who is franchise poison) wrote the prequels to Dune covering Leto's Dukeship (It's Phantom Menace: Extended Cut), Prelude to Dune which was just an awful imagining of the wars against Thinking Machines and then the Dune 7 and 8 which completely changed what Marty and Daniel were from being Face Dancers to Omnius and Erasmus. Some pet characters the made up for Prelude.

The Golden Path happened. Gotta remember it's a few thousand years after Emperor. Humanity was no longer chained to a center point for fear of another God Emperor. Leto broke the Bene Gesserit and his new breeding program was more successful for Humanity as it protects the Human Diaspora. Diaspora Bene Tleilaxu fricked up and created the Honored Matres through probable Bene Gesserit infiltration with a dash of Fish Speakers and dealing with a rogue Face Dancer rebellion. The HM were more or less BGs juiced up. As used all the same tactics just crazy aggressive. So that's why sex became a thing, because every time we see it before it's either actual love or political machinations. While HMs were straight up conquest through sex (a legacy of the Fish Speakers)

Then that got tossed out as Thinking Machines by Brian and Kevin. Jackasses.

My first read through, 4 was also my least favorite. After subsequent read throughs, 4 became my favorite. There was a lot of nuance that I missed the first time around.

Leto II is the nexus of this universe. The first three books lead up to him, and the last two are a consequence of his rule, the scattering, and his Golden Path.

My first time around, I completely missed what the Ixians were capable of, and that Leto had stopped it. He mentions it so nonchalantly that I completely glossed over it.

His Golden Path is what makes humanity possible in the millennia that follow.

Reading about Rhombur, his bitch sister, his dumbass father and their supposed friendship with the Atreides made my head hurt.
