I enjoyed the finale. I've been pretty critical of the show since the Matthew thing, but you could really tell last night that the writers wanted to close storylines and not have another super soapy ending like Bates being dragged off to jail. The show has a clean slate after Dan Stevens really screwed them over.
I was very surprised they jumped 8 months (I think?) for the finale episode. What year are we now? I think Martha pretty much summed up the theme of the show going forward and that is going to be how all of these people stuck in the old world and tradition are going to adapt to the new times. The Dowager and Carson are the worst offenders and provide some great comedic moments with this. Carson's reaction to the American valet was one of the funniest moments of the season.
Can we please get Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti full time? I know it won't happen, but the whole American storyline was great. There were a few things I wasn't a fan of in the finale, but I won't stir on those. Overall, the show improved throughout the season after bring placed in an extremely difficult position last year.

I love Shirley. I was so glad to see her back and I hope we see more of her. I'm thinking we will since she's touring Europe. I figure she'll be back for one reason or another before she returns to the states.
Carson and the American valet was darn funny.
I have no idea what year we're in. They sure took a big leap into the future. Who knows where it will start next year. I hate that there is only one season per year of this show.

The finale took place in the summer of 1923

Thanks.
Was there a Christmas Special in Dec 2013? I can't recall whether I watched one or not. I've seen it referred to in comments on Amazon under the Season 4 DVD. I know I watched something in December.

it was kinda weird....8 months between episodes. When Edith and the dowager we talking about the baby first i was like... oh she had an abortion...then i was like oh no she didn't she gave it up..but how dis she have the baby and give it up already?..then..oh they jumped ahead..
the odd thing is that the story line around mary and her 2 beaus didn't seem to have jumped ahead as much...same with pretty much every other storyline...
carson's reactions to a lot of the americans' way of speaking was pretty funny.
as was the dowager's...every time shirley said something she was like "what does it mean?"
she remains my favorite part of this show..
They actually have a dvd dedicated to her.
I'm glad they found a way to convince mary to drop her investigation into bate's london visit.
as for cliff hangers...
barrow and branson's mutual dislike seems to be getting hotter.
mary and her beaus
edith bringing the baby closer to home...
carson and hughes romance?
oh and shame on pbs for making me sit through 25 minutes of infomercial thinking maybe i might miss some last minute clip.

That's another reason I tape and watch after. I ff'd through that stuff to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Which one? They are calling it the Christmas Special: The London Season.
Oh, and I didn't think Rose's coming out was 8 months away in the episode before this one. They talked like it was coming up soon. Her parents sure are gone for a very long time. I guess they went on a trip for years and not months.

Last night's episode was the Christmas special. It was broadcast on Christmas Day in the UK.

Likewise. My wife and loved this show but the writers being forced to kill off Matthew was a blow to a lot of fans. Still the show has recovered about as well as can be expected and we enjoy season 4 and the finale' was wonderful.

I've been begging to see the Americans for weeks now. I always enjoy the conflict and sniping back and forth.
Btw, Barrow was awesome when he was watching Branson eating his meal. That was one of the funniest parts of the episode.

That was definitely one of the best scenes. Barrow was pretty much worthless this entire season, but he was money last night.

I think that's the point of her character is to show that as the youth are allowed to progress and move away from the old fashioned conservative style of aristocracy, they improve as people. Take Granny for example. Her last scene in the season was rather sad as she was told that people are thankfully leaving her way life far in the past. We may love her wit, but Granny really is a sad old cog that has little thoughts and feelings for others especially if they aren't on or above her level of royalty.
I would love to see the show spend a few episodes in 1920s America. Maybe Cora's brother can get married next season sending the family to New York. That would be a great add to the show.
And as much as I'm loving the 1920s, part of me would really love to see these writers and directors take on England in World War II. I doubt the show lasts that long though.

Does Edith really have any power to take her kid back to England? I'm pretty sure the Swiss family who adopted it could just tell her to get lost. I'm not familiar with Swiss adoption law at the time. That is the only plot line I do not like.

I'm sure the family could, but is the Swiss family a wealthy and powerful family like the Crawleys? I don't think we truly realize how much power and influence a rich British family may have had in the early 20th century.

Granny is the past and will stay in the past. It's not likely she adapts to the future well, but that makes her interesting.
Rose is the future obviously with more modern and forward thinking, even more than is going on there at that time.
Mary and Edith seem to be a bit in the middle. I'm finding it so interesting to watch the adjustments during this time period. Even seeing them get the phone was interesting and funny, particularly Carson.

I suppose it's possible but remember Edith is doing all this to avoid a scandal. The swiss family has the ultimate trump card no matter their station because they know her secret. Also, all of the European nations were still competing with each other through imperialism so the Swiss could use something like this as a power play to scandalize a British noble family. I wouldn't mind someone who studies history to give their input on this. It just doesn't seem like Edith would not get the child back so easily.

It's not like Edith is going to call on Daddy to save her child from the Swiss family, so I'm not sure what pull she has there unless she gets Bates to engage in some forgery.
