Black Panther' and the Oscars: Will the Academy Declare "Wakanda Forever"?

As AMPAS diversifies, the Marvel blockbuster could beat the bias against superhero movies amid a changing definition of "awards-worthy."

So does a more diverse Academy mean Black Panther's a shoo-in? "I thought so at first, but now I'm not so sure," says one awards consultant who's been quietly canvassing voters. "Lots of people like it, but will they place it first, second or third when they mark their ballots?" Given the preferential ballot system, that's the key question. And, in terms of black-themed films, Black Panther could find itself competing with upcoming movies like Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman, which debuted to strong reviews in Cannes; Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk, an adaptation of a James Baldwin novel; and Steve McQueen's heist movie, Widows,

No.

It should probably at least be nominated for a BET or Black Movie Award.

It's ground breaking for black cinema, but not for cinema in general.

If Infinity War isn't, then Black Panther certainly doesn't. Black Panther is a very good Marvel movie. But not many of them I would consider exactly Oscar worthy outside of costumes and special effects. The acting is well done and fits the characters in the MCU but I would hardly call any of them award worthy.

It’s not even the best Marvel movie to come out this year.

Actually, I didn't think of this but I could easily see it getting an Academy Award nomination for costume design.

I’d argue the special effects kind of sucked in Black Panther.

Black Panther was entertaining, but it definitely wasn't near as good as it was made out to be. Infinity War was miles better.

I liked it more than most people, but it’s not even be best marvel movie of the year.

Exactly what aspect of a movie makes it award-worthy? I have been trying to figure this out for a very long time and the only thing consistent is inconsistency.

It deserves to be nominated for an average marvel movie and nothing else

I haven't successfully endured the entire movie yet. Maybe I'll give it another go this weekend.

Academy Award? No. MTV or Kid's Choice Award? Sure.

I definitely think BP is deserving of a costume nomination. One thing I was disappointed about with BP were the special effects/CGI. Some of the worst out of all the MCU movies IMO, which is disappointing bc of how awesome BP looked in Civil War. There were times were the sets looked very fake and that was a little distracting.

Perhaps the most overrated movie of the past 5 years, and I enjoyed it. We've taken a significant step backwards in film if a mediocre movie even by Marvel standards, not by Oscar standards, is nominated for an Oscar in anything. If it is even nominated, any credibility the Oscars had will be lost. There are FAR better movies in the MCU alone. If this is nominated, it'll be because it's a black cast, and that, my friends, is the definition of racial bias.
