Disney admits Moana, Mando failed, doesn't care. Box office flops still profitable.

The TLDR is simple. They don't care that nobody asked for these movies, it helps the overall Disney brand and promotes merch sales for these properties. Disney has decided this is the way, screw what anyone else says.
The company’s CEO Josh D’Amaro told investors on an earnings call that Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu underperformed, but added the Disney+ TV series’ big-screen debut drove revenue to other parts of the company — such as toy sales and attendance to Star Wars rides at Disney theme parks.
“Even when our franchise films don’t meet our box office expectations, as with The Mandalorian and Grogu and the live-action Moana, our investments in these core properties fuel other parts of our company,” D’Amaro said. “The Mandalorian and Grogu drove healthy growth in retail sales for the Star Wars franchise and drew guests to the updated Millennium Falcon attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and led to significant engagement in gaming as well. And the live-action Moana is expected to be a strong title on Disney+, building on the success of the original film, which is one of the most-streamed movies of all time.”
The company’s shareholder letter added, “While audience scores for both Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and fiscal Q4’s live action Moana have been strong, both films underperformed our box office expectations. Even so, these franchise investments contributed to value creation beyond their theatrical releases.” As an example, Disney cited Toy Story, which has generated more than $16 billion as a franchise, though, unlike Grogu, Toy Story 5 is a billion-dollar grosser.

I argued this on here and people said it was stupid. They would like to do well in box office, obviously, but they’ll make shitloads of money either way.

I mean, obviously they are trying to frame it in a more positive way. But the movies are definitely basically marketing for the overall products and Disney brand.
I did randomly look at the highest grossing movies of all time earlier this week. And like more than half of them were Disney movies. As much as they’ve struggled making money from movies like they used to, they still have some that make bank too. I just wish they would get back to focusing on entertainment (especially family oriented) and good quality. Disney could still print money if they got back to the basics with movies and shows. But they usually just can’t seem to stay out of their own way these days.

Everyone asks 'why do this? No one ASKED for a live action remake!' is only part true. The INVESTORS did, that's who. Not the fans, not the general movie going audience.
These movies are nothing but massive ads for Disney as a whole, which employs 1000's of people to produce, and end up making money at the parks and from merch. Even if most of the Star Wars stuff ends up in a landfill, there's more than enough money made in other areas.

Maybe that’s why Disney’s stock is about where it was 10 years ago. Among the major American companies I am hard pressed to find another one with such complete disregard for its shareholders.

Disney views itself as too big to fail. And they may be right.

Well I don’t know about that. I just can’t figure out who thinks it’s a good idea to own the stock.

Is Disney supposed to act differently than any other massive corporation?

My guess, and what I hear others saying, is that because Disney is so widely diversified and backed by the right sorts of people, they can't fail. That's why they lose 100's of millions of dollars from a couple of movies but don't sweat it because of the profit they generate in other areas. They just fund failure by moving the money around.
They seem quite committed to their overall plan.

In most cases, if a movie studio loses 100's of millions of dollars, they close down or make substantial changes.
Except Disney.

Okay. Thank God I'm not in the club that forces me to see these movies, or else this would be a problem.

They’re a propaganda apparatus so the money from the WEF will keep coming no matter how bad their movie/tv products do.

AMC Theatres confirmed that The Mandalorian & Grogu themed merchandise achieved the third-highest total merch sales of any film in the theater chain’s history.
In their Q2 earnings report, toy giant Hasbro explicitly singled out The Mandalorian & Grogu as the single largest contributor to revenue growth within their Consumer Products segment.

You have no idea what you’re even saying. Jeez you people really are NPCs

I’m one of the few here who actually saw both movies in the theater. TBH I had a good time with Mando. Moana was lifeless, and I’m a huge fan of the 2016 movie. The acting was so terrible.

I’ve been saying for a while that this is what replaced rentals and physical sales and should be included in a movies overall profit (box office, streaming, merch, etc.).
