This seems weird. Why are they rebooting Doogie Howser? Why not just make a new show about a kid doctor?
Nevermind. I guess that is what they're doing. The use of the name Doogie Howser in this instance just seems so very odd to me. What was so special about him that they need to use his name for this?

Developing new IP is expensive. (Think research and development at a pharmaceutical lab.)
As such, studios like Disney have bought up a lot of smaller studios and absorbed their IP libraries. Now, they will re-sell us the old IP this time with a new twist. Only the dumbest of consumers wont know the difference. Only, there’s a lot of dumb consumers.

I guess that's a fairly decent explanation.
I just don't see how placing the name Doogie Howser on this show is going to draw in viewers of the old show, but not because of the gender/race/whatever swap. I don't see how placing that name on any show would have drawn in viewers of the old show. Maybe that's not the goal though.

I'm surprisingly ok with this. I watched Doogie religiously as a kid, and while I don't expect to watch much of this new one, it would be cool to show my kids something similar that I watched since I'd bet my kids wouldn't want to watch the original.
