I thought it was sad how he blamed it on himself. It wasn't his fault.

Before The Dark Knight, how many people knew who Heath Ledger was? He hadn't been in any big roles in any big movies before that.

The Patriot, Monster's ball, A knight's tale (love that movie), NED KELLY, Lords of dogtown, and brokeback mountain.

He was the only character in Crystal Skull that was extremely abhorrent IMO. He didn't write the movie but still.

I know right. HL was such a good actor. I really loved him in every movie I've ever seen him in.

This. Ledger was very established already.

Again, what??

This is what made Ben Affleck a star, not Armageddon:

You and I have different interpretations of the word "star". Affleck wasn't the leading man or one of the leading men in a big blockbuster movie until Armageddon. Smith was a tv star with Fresh Prince, but became a movie star with Bad Boys and then a superstar with ID4.

WTF does this have to do with it? I think your missing the point that his Oscar in Good Will Hunting was probably the main reason he got the role in Armageddon. Ever think if that?

So you want me to believe that Michael Bay gave a shite about his role in GWH when he decided to cast him as Action Hero X?

EL OH EL

??? Really? Pretty much everybody.

Of course people on here knew who he was. I knew his name before he was cast. However do you believe that more than 10-15% of people who saw him in TDK knew who the hell he was before he played The Joker? Not a chance. If you really believe that Average Joe knows the name of lead actors in smaller films or lower level supporting actors in somewhat big movies then you are a damn fool.

Bad Boys doesn't matter at all since it did not directly lead to him getting on Independence Day. And you clearly don't get what being a star means.

The director and the lead actor are hating on it

They aren't "hating" on it. They are "apologizing" for the second one because every Snobby Joe Movie Critic hated it and they don't want that perception for the next installment.

I don't see how someone can defend it after this thread.

Why should people have to defend their entertainment selections to internet message board movie snobs? Oh I'm a better movie watcher than you because I watch all the Oscar winners? GTFO.

They are basically admitting that it was a colossal fail.

Yeah a franchise that will easily cross $2 billion and may approach $3 billion at the worldwide box office is a colossal fail. I bet the studios are really regretting it now!

so in this thread, it's been established that michael bay basically gave affleck, hartnett, will smith their names and they wouldn't be shite without him?

Yes because "helped kickstart" = gave them their names.

Damn I know these people had fame at one level or another before these movies, but shite to say he didn't put all their names on the map at a higher level than they were before is just stupid.

All hail GamecockAlum. You really think only 10-15% of America has heard of Brokeback Mountain? Really?

Considering that production for ID4 didn't even start until a couple months after Bad Boys was released in theaters, I'm go ahead and call you on this bullshite.

quote:

He was living in an apartment with his brother Casey and friend Matt, getting tired of being turned down for the big roles in films and being given the forgettable supporting ones. Since Matt was having the same trouble, they decided to write their own script, where they could call all the shots. So, after finishing the script for Good Will Hunting (1997), they gave it to their agent Patrick Whitesell, who showed it to a few Hollywood studios, finally being accepted by Castlerock. It was great news for the two but Castlerock wasn't willing to give Ben and Matt the control over the project they were hoping for. It was friend Kevin Smith who took it to the head of Miramax who bought the script giving Ben and Matt the control they wanted and, in December of 1997, Good Will Hunting (1997) was released, making the two unknown actors famous. The film was nominated for 9 Academy Awards and won two, including Best Original Screenplay for Ben and Matt. The film marked Ben's breakthrough role, in which he was given for the first time the chance to choose roles instead of having to go through grueling auditions constantly. He chose such roles in the blockbusters Armageddon (1998/I), Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Pearl Harbor (2001).

Yeah your right, Good Will Hunting had nothing to do with it.

Do you really think most high school kids know what Brokeback Mountain is? Do you think any of them even knew that Heath Ledger was in it?

You are extremely ignorant if you think that more than 30-45 million Americans knew who Heath Ledger was before The Dark Knight just because he was in Brokeback Mountain.

Yeah sure, only snobs hadn't the cinematic perfection that was Transformers 2

Yes, I am a better and more knowledgeable film goer than one who likes Transformers 2. I can say that pretty confidently.

Yeah, because everyone knows that Box Office equals the quality of the film.

And you're right, Michael Bay cast his to play an action star in a space movie ONLY because of Good Will Hunting. That's the only reason why he got the role right? Because the characters were exactly the same and Bay and the casting director just fell in love with him.

You are a retard if you think 30-45 million Americans knew who Heath Ledger was before The Dark Knight. You seriously think that more than 10-15% of our nation saw or gave a shite about Brokeback Mountain, much less knew who the hell was in it?

Yep, I'm the genius who can see that it was Good Will Hunting that launched Ben Affleck into stardom. Doesn't really take that much reasoning to see this.
