Top Gun is a classic. It's cinematic greatness and I cant wait for the sequel to come out. My only question is, did Goose have to die? It was heartbreaking in an otherwise fun 80s movie. Maybe Goose's death made the movie more legitimate. I don't know. What does the MTV board think?

Yes or else Mav doesn’t become the only pilot in the past 40 years to shoot down 3 planes

Yes...to accentuate Mav was reckless.

Goose said, don't do it Mav. He had already been chastised for going below the hard deck.

They had to clear Mav with the jet wash...

But Goose dying is needed to come full circle of the entire narrative that Mav is dangerous and it cements the comeback.

It's beyond pivotal in the movie. A lot of things they set up as Mav being such a wildcard and cocky don't work if Mav just wins in the end.

It's the most important part of the movie, otherwise how does Mav change the way he thinks?

Yeah. I get it. That about sums it up. Makes perfect sense. Makes Top Gun a much more legitimate movie. Despite all of the 80s fun and volleyball Kenny Loggins moments, Goose's death is a game changer for the movie and the characters.

Plus, that's how Maverick learned about how his Dad died.

I think if your going to make a movie about a badass fighter pilot give him more than 3.

Yes, Viper wouldn't have risked his career telling Mav what he told him.

Yes. Because it's a movie.

Yes.

Pete Mitchell needed that loss to "ground" him. Until then, he was only Maverick.

I dont think so. I think if you have Goose get seriously injured and then have a scene where Meg yells at him (as opposed to never being mad at him at all) and Goose laying in a hospital bed telling him he has to change its a better movie.

I always feel bad at the end that Mav is doing whatever hes doing and Meg has to go home and raise fatherless kids and we're all just like "ok".

maybe he didn't really die and lived on to manipulate the actions from then until now and the new movie will reveal this much as the classic Blofeld reveal in Bond.

Great post, but this part got me thinking.

Did he actually change his approach??

I understand he doesn’t leave Iceman and plays the wingman part well in that final encounter.

But judging by the preview for the sequel, not to mention the title, he’s still “Maverick” all these years later. Hasn’t moved up the ladder, appears to still buck authority.

It will be interesting to see how the sequel balances that. Did he actually make permanent change from the events of 86 or did he simply go back to his old ways in the interim.

Cannot wait for this.

Cobra Kai proved that going back to the well to classic characters can work if done respectfully and staying true to the original.

I’m confident Cruise wouldn’t have done this if he wasn’t sure it would be done right.

yes, because then mav has to face his own mortality and deal with being responsible for his best friends death so he has to be less reckless and stop taking irrational chances and that is what makes him a more mature, focused, and better pilot

so without that reality check of the death of his friend, he doesnt experience a life change moment

During a period of time when there was either no war or no enemy with a viable (or any )air force?
3 is infinitely more than just about anyone else in the time frame.
Ask a modern day F15 pilot how many dogfights they've been in....
