Yeah, at this point...because he told them 3 years ago.

You understand 3 years ago was just when making season 7 right? It is not far off from a story point. And they did not state that GRMM told them that. He may have but they have already altered a lot of his story. You know she didn't make those pies right?

Well this quote sounds like they came up with this on their own. Does not seem like GRMM told them that Arya should kill the night king to me.

There isn't even a night king in the books yet. These dudes are winging it.

Couldn't be more disappointed in this episode. At the start of the episode it filled us with promise that it might actually live up to the hype. It killed the show for me.

Lighten up and enjoy the ride.

Perhaps so.

There have been the folktales of the Night's King in the books, however.

He gave them a fairly detailed outline to work from. You guys are acting like D&D haven't even read the books and didn't ever have any discussions with GRRM about the show.

Oh I am sure they have read the books. But they take their liberties. It's not like the entire Dorne subplot wasn't altered or completely made up by them.

Are you going to ignore their quotes about making Arya the killer?

We have no idea how detailed this outline was. They met to discuss things yes, but that is all we know.

Yes, they have cut a lot of fat, combined characters, and truncated storylines.

But the overall gist is going to be the same as what GRRM has planned.

Any major changes in the eventual book (that I suspect is pretty much done but is being held back to let the show finish) are going to be made in reaction to fan vitriol on the internet.

It's like when people freaked out about Stannis burning Shireen as if it was something he'd never do and then GRRM confirmed he does in fact do that under slightly different circumstances. LINK

Yes, some things are different than the books but they are not going wildly off track. They are following the outline he gave them.

Are you once going to ignore what they said about coming to the decision to have Arya kill the Night King?

We came to the decision 3 years ago (Season 7)
We didn't want it to be Jon because Jon is always the hero.

If GRMM told them how to kill off a character (who isn't even in his books) why would they say that?

"For, God, I think it's three years now or something, we've known that it was going to be Arya who delivers that fatal blow."

Take that how you want, though, a later quote concerning Jon does sound more like they decided that rather than "knew" that in order to be unexpected.

It was literally the following sentence, same train of thought. This was their choice unless they really misspoke.

They decided that just like they decided to kill off Doran and keep Beric alive. They are not following everything GRMM did.

I think if there had been some combat between Arya and the NK, maybe 30-45 seconds, but with her finally killing him in exact same way, people wouldn't be griping as much.
