due to life getting crazy i missed it in theaters
i'll just have to pull a SFP dive bomb in the future
I saw it again a week ago at the Alamo Drafthouse. I normally don’t advocate for giving this theater chain money, but I’m sure AMC still has it.

You cannot do this movie well with a 120 min run time.
You cannot.
I really enjoyed both Dune and Children of Dune.

watch the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune, unless he can get Salvador Dali & Orson Welles, no one should ever attempt to make this movie again...
well Jodorowsky is still alive, let him make it.

It was in the second book, Dune Messiah.

I just want to see Villeneuve use Jodorowsky's concept art.

Man, it's been years since I read the Dune series, but it's one of the best works ever written. Herbert delves way deep into the psychological and physiological universe of mankind, its just really hard to imagine it being done in a way that does it justice. Lynch's bastardization of the story was entertaining, but ineffective in telling the deeper story. I did enjoy the Sci-Fi miniseries, but I still found it lacking somewhat. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

I just disagree. Lynch is one of a handful of verifiable geniuses in the art. He was forced to make a huge number of well-documented compromises, and others were done over his strong objections. When he does his own work, on his own terms, the results may be polarizing, but are generally masterpieces or just short - even working with other's material (Elephant Man) on other occasions, his work is brilliant.
I mean, Lucas offered him Empire based on Eraserhead. And it would have been fantastic (but probably not as good as what we got, one of the finest films of all time, but I digress).
Even Herbert himself was complimentary of Lynch's Dune. The "perfect" is the enemy of the "good" in a lot of very real cases, this being one of them.

Really? A mere mortal can't capture the 410 pages (or whatever) of Frank Herbert's Dune in 3 hours? Say it ain't so!
But, I daresay Villeneuve will do no better. While visually adequate (mostly) his Blade Runner sequel failed to capture a lot of the nuance of the original.
Now, Lynch's Dune isn't the cinematic masterpiece as Ridley's Blade Runner, so perhaps it will be an easier bar to clear.
(Here's a little bit of trivia - key female role in both Scott's Blade Runner and Lynch's Dune, played by none other than Sean frickin' Young, baws.)

Lynch's Dune built an incredible world that mesmerized me as a child. It has flaws. His treatment of Herbert's idea of a messiah is a little perverted in the telling. He also wasn't able to touch on a lot of the finer themes of the story due to a limited amount of time to squeeze them all in.
But, imo, the greatest source of its criticism is that the story inherently can never appeal to a general enough audience for commercial success, and I think it was billed as a high budget answer to Star Wars. It also already has a dedicated built in fan base who mostly could never be satisfied with whatever result compared to the original work.

I think it's just become popular to bash Lynch's Dune. The meme "Lynch's Dune sucks" is so strong and pervasive that people echo it automatically. People say they hate it who haven't even seen it. No one wants to be the uncool kid with poor taste who doesn't hate it.
I don't think it's bad at all. An all time great? No. But considering just how hard, possibly impossible, it is to translate that book to the screen... it's actually a remarkable job.
I thought the miniseries was soulless. No spark. Jardorowski's Dune looked TERRIBLE. He's a very interesting character and the whole story of it is entertaining, especially how many super successful careers it sparked, so it made for a great documentary, but if he had made his movie it would have bombed.
The truth is that any Dune movie is doomed by 3 things:
1) It's too hard to translate to the screen. It's primarily a novel of ideas. It's also not really cinematic. Finally, Herbert doesn't describe how things LOOK in detail.
2) The sub narratives, which are what the book is really about, will go right over the heads of the common person. The average person is really dumb. Dune is a thinking person's book and an attempt to put that in a movie will just frustrate the masses, who only like comic book bullshite.
3) Book fans hate pretty much every movie made off of their book. The only exception I can think of is Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies. Since the only built-in audience for a Dune movie are the book fans, and Dune fans are extremely passionate about Dune, you are pretty much assured to have mountains of hate heaped on a movie version right out of gate by the disappointed book fans.

I liked the sci-fi version when it came out but on rewatch I was way too kind when it came out. The acting in the mini-series is almost comically bad.
I really was hoping they would keep going with the books. I wanted to see some crazy arse God Emperor on the screen.

It really is something. Even typically pretty good actors in the syfy version sucked.
