I will say that I don't hate Lynch's Dune at all, and perhaps my use of "bastardization" here was a bit harsh and unfair. I think it was just before its time, as is evidenced by the bad special effects. My biggest pet peeve was the Weirding Modules - did they really need to add those? The second was the overuse of the inner dialogue. And that's a tough one, because how the hell do you tell this story? I thought they didn't do justice to Thufir Hawat's character, as his role was much bigger in the books. Sting as Feyd Rautha was just a gimmick to me, but the rest of the cast was superb, especially Baron Harkonnen and Duke Leto. And to be fair, I saw the movie when I was 10 - WAY before I read the books. But after reading the books I re-watched it and was able to understand it a whole hell of a lot better. All-in-all, I would have loved to have seen what Lynch could have done with it without the handcuffs he had on.

Studio meddling was the weirding modules. They wanted a lightsaber equivalent to keep the franchise going as a star wars merch competitor. It's why the atriedes get Sonic weaponry in The games.

They should have just upgraded the crysknives and made them able to penetrate shields at any speed or something like that.
