Saw it for the first time and searched and surprised it didn't come up more. Thought it was excellent.

Maybe because it’s from 1978

I hadn’t seen it in prob 20 years and I watched it again recently and forgot how boring it was. The wedding scene was 20 min too long. Then 5 min of deer hunting with friends. Then 5 min of war and suddenly they are POWs. Then the movie basically starts.

The acting was very good, but the movie itself was not good at all.

Apparently it was supposed to be about people playing Russian roulette in Vegas and he changed it to make a statement about war.

I tend to agree. There are some awesome parts, but it's so choppy and uneven. I know it's supposed to be some masterpiece, and I do like it ok bc the good parts are really good, but it is not great imo.

We've discussed it several times on this board. In depth.

Hard to find a worse thing on earth that has produced excellence in film.

I also watched it recently for the first time, thought it was pretty bad. I thought i fell asleep during the war part when they were all of the sudden captured.

I assumed it was a Steel town.

But Coal-mining/Company towns on the other hand..tough to beat in movies...in terms of dead-end depressing.

Very good movie but the wedding scene was way too long.

I remember watching it on the couch as a teen and falling asleep during the wedding scene. Then I woke up during the last Russian Roulette scene and was so disturbed and confused. I re-watched the next day. It was a little easier to get through the wedding scene, but I could just imagine showing it to someone.

"It gets better. I promise. You just gotta sit through like another half hour of this."

"Actually...I'm gonna head out."

The movie’s name is The Deer Hunter, and the kind of deer they shoot isn’t even a deer we have in the US. fricking Hollywood.

Great movie!

The quality, plot, cast, relationships, symbolism, behind the scenes happenings, setting, societal significance/context so soon after the war, handling of the war, "one shot" narrative, etc. ...all perfect.

The cast (DeNiro, Streep, Walken, Savage, etc.) performances were also perfect.

It has a 92-93% rotten tomatoes rating, was nominated for 9 academy awards (winning 5, including best picture of 1978). A top 10-15 all-time movie. Saw it in a packed theater in 1978...it's release was a big deal.

Very long movie, even after a lot edited out.
