watched last night

Really enjoyed it. For some reason I couldn't find myself rooting for that stay at home nerd dad who wanted to "stand up" to the more powerful king nerd guy

I'm convinced that Role Models took careful consideration of this movie.

The starbucks guy was pretty epic. You could tell that even in the nerd realm, he was an outcast. Perhaps his only chance at life would be to create....wait for it....a realm within a realm. Go 2 layers deep in pretend land.

I must admit that I didn't really quite understand why that one dude wanted to unite against the king nerd? Was that conversation they were having about it that got a little heated, was that like in character or like "timeout"?

My fiance really enjoyed it as well. I think she yelled, "lightening bolt" to the tv like a dozen times....when she wasn't laughing...

i think the whole angle of us calling him the "king" is why. he was 1 guy who was too powerful

even an alliance of everyone else couldn't defeat his team

Like Dwight's Second-Life character having his own Second-Life character.

I think it's available on hulu.com as well.

I'm old enough to have been a 11-12 year old kid when the original Dungeons and Dragons game came out. My friends and I played every weekend. It was a great way to foster imagination and have some fun with friends. As I got in to highschool, girls and sports took my attention away from D&D.

But I still love sci-fi/fantasy novels and movies. I was huge in to Ever Quest back in the day.

All that being said, I don't think I could LARP. It's just one level of nerdom too far.

For anyone that knows about LARPs more than I do (pretty much everyone), what is to stop any player from acting like they didn't get hit with the foam sword or arrow or whatever? Similar to what happened in the scene in Role Models, would they pause the game and argue about it, ignore the result of the battle, kick them out of the game, etc? I would love to see the fit that someone would throw if the person they "killed" just kept fighting.

I actually think I would have a blast doing it. I don't think I'd do it on a regular basis, but I bet it's more fun that it looks. The difference would be in how seriously you take it.

Imagine bringing a real sword and just going all out fileting dudes then running to the top of the hill and claiming absolute victory

I think you underestimate how much jerking off would go on once they saw you had an actual, real sword. Not to mention all the nussy you'd get.

i get the feeling they have specific rules about this and if you try to work outside the rules, you will be punished

while watching this movie i thought about how funny it would be to bring in a guy who was actually good at in-field strategy and swordfighting to dominate the landscape

Just watched this over the weekend.

Good stuff.

I'm a little concerned over some of these people, but hey, what ever floats your boat, I guess.

"Keldar" is a smug bastard who probably should get run through IRL...

I admit that I went to their website after watching the movie and thought about going to one of their Darkon events and being a mercenary. Just once, to say I did it.

This, and looking at it, someone who actually possessed an ounce of athleticism...

Just finished this doc because you guys suggested it.

I never played any role playing games spare the occasional N64/Gameboy game. I did feel a connection to some of the people in it. Some of the things they said were powerful, and I found it interesting how some feel about the game and on the level they let it enter into their real lives.

I don't think I'd ever participate in this kind of activity, but it was interesting to see how people cope with society. Some of their comments made sense to why Darkon works for them.

Does anyone know if there is a copy of the rulebook out on the web?

If you watch the documentary, Monster Camp, I think it goes into that a little bit. Monster Camp is the more nerdy version of Darkon. Used to be on netflix instant, but doesn't look like it anymore. Same stuff as the "Lightning Bolt" youtube video. I think it was like the person who has a grievance will go up to one of the guys that's running the show and complain and everything stops for a few minutes while they all argue and work it out.
