So reading through the various threads, I have come across some great ideas on how people would have done things differently to make this movie actually good. Hoping to gather them all together so I can have a good movie in my head and something to bitch about with friends.
I'll start by copying and expanding upon a post I made in the main thread.

Opening scene had a lot of potential but the stupid back and forth between Poe and Hux made it lame. Make it more serious. Don't have the bombers be insanely slow. Have The Resistance be able to get away without being tracked so we don't end up with the awful OJ-style chase theme for the rest of the movie.

Have Leia actually die in the battle to close her character and add weight to the conflict. The Resistance is now under Admiral Akbar's command. Sound strategic decisions get made and a fan favorite gets some screen time.

Luke throwing the light saber over his shoulder was SO BAD and should have never happened. After Rey hands it to him, he should be looking down at it in his hands and feel emotion and inner conflict due to his past with it. Do rapid flashbacks to important events in the light saber's history with Luke like he has PTSD. It would have been fine and much more effective if he was simply overcome with emotion or disdain for the past and dropped it at his own feet. It flows with him not wanting to be a part of that world anymore without making it an out-of-place joke. Luke doesn't want to train Rey but does invite her to speak with him so he can hear about Leia and Han etc. After they speak and part ways for the night, Yoda or Obi can appear to Luke as a force ghost or a dream and reason with Luke about why he needs to overcome his fear of failure (fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, etc etc) and train Rey to fight against the dark side. Maybe Yoda gives us a nugget about Rey being the descendent of someone important???

The plot with the ships barely out of reach and Finn/Rose going on their dumb mission was crap and should have been scrapped all together. Figure out something better that can put the First Order and The Resistance into direct conflict. There has to be something better, but honestly, any plot outside of Rey/Luke and Kylo/Snoke training is unimportant and doesn't really need to be included. The next movie can be big on First Order-Resistance conflict. There should have been no Rose. Leia should be dead. If you want to know what Ackbar and Poe and Finn if you want to wake him up are doing, just show them regrouping, recruiting, and/or preparing for a conflict. This could be where we get some idea of what these people's lives are like and why they are fighting.

The main bulk of the movie should have been centered around Luke training Rey and Snoke training Kylo.
Show the wisdom Luke has gained through his travels and explore different parts of the force. Show some qualities in Rey's power that scare Luke into flashbacks of his time training Kylo and their falling out. This could be an awesome flashback/dream of what actually went down between the two and it'd be cool to see someone turn to the dark side on screen, I mean you'd hope it'd be a better turn than Anakin in the prequels. Hint that Luke has an insane amount of power but don't show it yet (that's what we all wanted out of Luke). Luke's interactions with Rey restore his faith in the galaxy and create a vehicle for him to come back from exile.
We were promised dark side training in TFA and I want to fricking see it. Snoke and Kylo's training should have been brutal and dark. It should have really fleshed out how evil and manipulative and cold Snoke is. He tears Kylo apart and basically tortures him during training to bring out the true darkness in Kylo. Shock him with Force lightning, throw him around and break his bones, mind frick the shite out of him. Have Snoke explaining the intricacies of the dark side and/or history of his path to get there during this time. This would have given us more exploration into the dark side and especially Snoke so that we could truly HATE him and understand Kylo turning on him. It would have made his death more meaningful and had us rooting for him to die. Rey shouldn't have been there and Kylo should have eviscerated the Royal Guard by himself after murdering Snoke. This enforces his new dark side mastery and authority as the new supreme leader and big bad.

Hux enters the thrown room and finds Kylo on the throne and Snoke dead. yada yada dick measuring contest that Kylo wins yada yada. Hux reports that they have located The Resistance forces on the red-dirt planet (Crait?) Kylo orders an assault so he can crush them once and for all.

Assault on Crait
Both The First Order and The Resistance have more forces because there was no OJ-chase dumb-frickery. Let's get Poe back in an X-wing and an overwhelmingly large number Tie Fighters (Kylo/Hux want to overwhelm and crush The Resistance)

1. Can still have that big cannon fire a shot that opens the big door a little like they did. That was fine. But it has a shield over it and X-wings can't destroy it from above.
While it heats up again, Finn kamikazies under the shield and into its mouth. Gives him a hero's death and a reason for not continuing to use it to just wipe everyone out.

2. Rey and Luke are there to rejoin The Resistance. The First Order has been dominating, the cannon opened the big door but has been destroyed. Luke knows that the only way to end this eventual slaughter is to cut off the head of the snake: Kylo. Rey wants to go with him, but Luke doesn't allow her to go out and fight because he believes he caused Ben to become Kylo and it it is up to him to fix it. Stay with the idea that Luke has renewed hope in people (if he can turn Vader, he can turn Kylo right?)

3. Luke should not have been a force projection. He should have been there in person. Still have the walkers light him up but he is so force powerful that he withstands. After the dust settles he is still standing there. He then uses his immense force powers to destroy/knock over the walkers Maybe freeze the lasers and throw them back at the walker. Maybe have him bring down a Star Destroyer. He calls out to Ben.

4. Kylo has the shuttle land and he walks out to face Luke for a mano-e-mano, student-teacher, light-dark light saber showdown. Kylo is now much more powerful after his dark side training and thirst for revenge and power. He can do force lightning and uses it against Luke (could introduce cool new dark side powers here). He is shouting at Luke while they fight about how he wronged him and forced him to the dark side. Luke is not trying to kill him (only playing defense) but bring him back to the light to save him from himself and because he is family. But Kylo is lost to the dark side and uses Luke's intentions against him. Not sure how to end this fight without Luke dying but a death in this way would have been a better payoff than him floating away as a force fart. Solidifies Kylo as dark and evil and the ultimate big bad. He just killed the 2 most loved Star Wars characters in back to back movies.

5. With the First Order assault troops destroyed by Luke, Luke dead, and maybe Kylo injured if we want to go that way, The Resistance mounts a counter attack and Kylo/Hux turn tail and bounce out to fight another day. Rey walks out to where Luke was cut down and picks up his green light saber. She ignites it.

END CREDITS

We have real character development with solid motivations for actions.
We got dark side training and Luke being a badass.
We have transitioned from the OT characters to the new generation with good send offs.
Finn's arc has been completed and he died for something bigger than himself.
The First Order and The Resistance have sizable forces to fight with in the next movie.
Our protagonist has actual training.
Our antagonist has morphed from an immature punk to a cold, powerful master of the dark side.
Can have epic showdowns in the final movie on the large scale with the two armies being intact and on the small scale with our trained force users.

Look forward to hearing other people's ideas

It’s very simple since it is mostly in the film: double down on Rey and Kylo Ren while keeping up with the Resistance at a bare minimum. Have Kylo Ren be trained by Snoke as the cliffhanger promised and then Snoke’s death is mostly fine.

Also have Rey have an active part in the finale, preferably a lightsaber duel between her and Kylo Ren where she loses this time.

I would of had Rey take Kylo’s hand and join him. They would have gone down together to fight the resistance and both Rey and Ren would go down to the ground to fight Luke. But while Kylo faced Luke one on one, Finn would use his binoculars and see Rey standing on the other side. That would lead him to walking out and shooting at Rey pissed off, and Poe trying to go save Finn but everyone holding him back. Rey would deflect his shots while he walked toward her screaming, but eventually he would run screaming at her and she would have to put a lightsaber through him, whispering she was sorry in his ear.

The millennium falcon would show up and save them, but as Leia and Poe looked down at Rey and Ren on the ground. Luke wouldn’t die in this scenario, but would have to be the one to kill them both in the next movie.

Rey should've watched Snoke's ship blow up the transport with Finn, Leia, and Poe on it, then in a fit of pure rage and anger dominated and killed Snoke. Then Kylo kills the red cannon fodder Troopers while she recoils in shock and he invites her to join him.

Not to be incesitive, but they really should have killed off Leia. If anything, they could have given her a secret funeral scene of the remaining resistance across the galaxy mourning her death. Would have been completely fine with that scenario though. Almost everyone dying but Rey and Kylo. They could be the balance in the force together.

@Breesus

In that situation, does Rey actually join Kylo? Do they move forward to destroy The Resistance and rule together and make dark side babies? Does Rey learn from Kylo and then kill him to have all the power? Is Luke the force user opposing them?

Couldn’t have given screen time to another tough as nails female character then. Would still frick Laura Dern though

If we are talking remake ideas:

Force Awakens

1. Star Killer gets a shot off that kills Leia, C3PO and R2 (all worthless, you paid homage, now bye)

2. Kylo kills Han (Later, thanks for coming harrison) Could be just as Starkiller shoots and he feels Leia's death, which gives him enough anger to knife Daddy)

3. Kylo finds Fin and Rey and toys with them drunk with power of being free of his parents(He is NOT weak)

4. He says something like he has a use for Rey, but no use for Fin, and he force grabs the saber to kill Fin and that's when we see Rey force pull it from him (like in movie) showing that she does have force power too.(great a new hero)

5. This shocks Kylo, but he quickly force tosses her aside and grabs the sabre from her.(she is absolutely NO match)

6. Just as he lights it up to strike down Fin, Chewbacca filled with wookie rage comes charging in and starts mauling Kylo. (we get to see chewie FIGHT!)

7. Chewbacca rips his arm off (shout out to New hope), and gashes his body and face, but Kylo still has enough in him to kill Chewbacca.

8. Kylo is left like Anakin at the end of #3, and will need to be built like vader.(his want and destiny)

9. Finn and Rey escape on Falcon leaving Kylo behind as somehow he's grabbed before starkiller blows.

10. Final scene is a camera starts to focus on some distant island that narrows and pans to Lukes face with the eyes closed, and then his eyes open (awakens).

end scene.

All main characters are killed off except Luke. Luke feeling the destruction of his friends (like OB1 when Alderan got blown up) is awoken from his slumber.

.....NOW write The Last Jedi.

You have a new foundation cast similar to old cast:

Snoke=Emporer
Kylo=Vader
Rey=Luke
Luke=OB1
Poe=Han
Finn=Chewie
BB8=R2

Absolutely. Doesn't have anything to do with Carrie Fisher actually being dead. It was terrible story telling to have her be blown up and sucked out into space only to float her old arse back and walk over to the door. Let alone her be up and about like 8 hours later.
It cheapened everything around it. Give actions in the movie some weight and consequences. I mean frick, they killed Han. Don't puss out when its logical to kill Leia.

Find out next time on Dragon Ball Z!

In my scenario, something like
I would've had Rey agree to go with Kylo under the premise that they'll destroy the first order together. Kylo convinces her the resistance is destroyed. Kylo leaves her on the ship to confront Luke without her knowledge, and Rey arrives just too late to save Luke from Kylo running him through with a lightsaber.

Seeing Luke die she promises to never join Kylo but she also says she senses still light in him. There is still hope. He says you're wrong and she'll learn in time to join him. He leaves on his ship, but not before promising to kill the first order and the resistance. He wants absolute power and he wants the old ways gone on both sides. and she is left crying over Luke's dead body alone in the desert.

Movie ends. With Jedi spirit Luke telling Rey the resistance is far from destroyed, that was Kylo Sith deception, and tells her to seek out the remains of the resistance and continue her training.

Last shot is Rey and Ren mind meld stare down as the credits and music come on.

Yes. Give me the wookie carnage we missed out on with the Ewok switcheroo.

Im down with Kylo actually needing the mask but don't have to have it. Would be solid with maybe a half metal face and eye. The eyes show a lot of emotion and motivation when captured correctly in film and photography. It was cool that Vadar was emotionless but a good actor/director/cinematographer can use facial expressions as a tool.

The number 1 priority for me for these movies would be to delicately handle the deaths of beloved old school characters.

First movie, han solo dies with a wimper. Put his arse on the millennium falcon and have him make the ultimate sacrifice to destroy Starkiller. Before he does it have him tell chewy to take command of the ship. Then he calls to Leia and has an emotional goodbye with her as they play the cloud city theme in the background. Then he walks over to chewie and they finish their suicide mission to take out the Starkiller base.

Boom, I just fixed probably the biggest problem with TFA by giving a meaningful and satisfying death to solo, and chewie and the falcon go as well, as they all should together.

Don't even get me started on luke Skywalker in TLJ

Your gripe is Solo's death?

That was awesome IMHO. Failing to redeem his son and showing the true monster inside Kylo was badass.

I don't know who you are, but that is great ideas.
I would have JIMP had luke pulled Snoke's ship to the ground. Would have been so cool.

I agree Finn was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice like Rose's sister.

I think more resistance should have survived.

I wanted Leia to die and that turn Ben more grey. Hurt Snoke but not kill him and save Rey.

Luke still could have died in the same way, but he should have been on surface.

I really liked Hux though. Good classic easy to hate bad guy.

Have to agree. Much more meaningful for Kylo's character to kill his father with his own hands. Han had already showed he was still a badass by going on that mission and jumping out of hyer-speed on his landing approach.

All credit belongs to Cs here, but I agree with pretty much everything he says in this is how the movie should have gone: LINK

quote:

I feel like most people could concoct a better plot and trajectory for many of the characters in this film. For example, take something like this -

---

Film starts off the same. In the middle act, however, we see more of Kylo training with Snoke, and less of Finn and Rose doing random, pointless things. We visibly see Snoke becoming frustrated with Kylo over the course of the film, and resultantly see Kylo's anger and hostility build towards Snoke.

Kylo brings in Rey, and all of the interactions between Rey and Snoke play out the same. However, instead of Kylo killing Snoke with the blue saber (which is borderline comedy), he instead Force pulls it towards Rey; she catches it, stands up, while at the same time Kylo ignites his red saber. They both stand facing Snoke, who then instructs his guards to take them out. We get the same fight scene, but with Snoke looking on, watching it all play out. After Kylo and Rey dispose of the guards, they turn to face Snoke. Snoke then proceeds to toy with both of them. He uses Force projection, lightning, sends them flying around the room, etc. And then, just before he applies the final blow, Luke shows up.

Luke and Snoke then have a quick back and forth discussion. Luke makes a few snarky remarks towards Snoke, noting how he felt his presence and ambition after the fall of the Empire, but how he was too cowardly to make himself known. Snoke retorts that Luke is old, washed up, and wasted his potential with the Force. They then have an epic fight, with Luke igniting and using his green lightsaber. Kylo looks on, waiting to jump in at the right moment, as he wants both of them dead. Just before Luke kills Snoke, Holdo's ship pierces through the Dreadnaught, and they all have to escape. Luke finds Rey and they manage to escape down to Crait to join up with the remnants of the Resistance. Kylo manages to escape as well, but Snoke, badly injured, fails to escape and ends up being killed.

The battle on Crait plays out largely the same. Kylo, however, senses both Luke and Rey inside the base, and decides to take his own patrol and ship to go after them himself. He finds a side entrance and makes his way inside. The troopers he brings with him flank the remaining Resistance forces on the inside, so they're forced to enter into a firefight. You now have two battles taking place - one on the outside involving the AT-ATs, and one on the inside. Rey senses Kylo, and runs off into the caverns and tunnel system...Kylo does the same. Luke stays with Leia, Poe, and the others to fend off the surge of Stormtroopers that found a way in with Kylo. Kylo and Rey then meet in a small side cavern and have a duel. This time, Kylo completely overpowers Rey. He destroys the blue lightsaber and severely wounds Rey, but she manages to escape. She finds her way back to Luke, Leia, Poe, and the others, and they manage to find a way out and escape the planet.

Cut to the credits.

You now have an interesting set up for Episode IX. At the beginning of Episode IX, Luke would complete (or actually start...) Rey's training by teaching her how to construct a lightsaber. He could then go on to say how he was too old for this, and how if she wants to truly become the next Jedi, she must face Kylo alone. This type of trajectory would satisfy nearly everyone, as it focuses and keeps the story on Rey and her personal arc, while still keeping Luke around as the immensely powerful and prudent Jedi Master.

---

Why something like this is superior to what the film actually gave us -

- Theming. Rey was MIA for the final chapter in TLJ, yet she's our primary protagonist. We need her to grow, to fail, and to redeem herself. None of that happened in TLJ, but in the above mock plot, you have a clear arc - the hubris and confidence in going after Kylo, and then the failure and defeat of facing him again. This would have set up an epic showdown in Epsisode IX.

- Luke kicking arse and being treated properly. We didn't get any of this in TLJ. Even worse is the fact that he was killed off in the most irreverent way possible.

- Kylo's redemption. In the above mock plot, you have Kylo exerting his dominance over the protagonist. This creates a more menacing and authoritative villain for Episode IX.

- Snoke. If you're going to randomly kill him off, do it properly. Dying in the crash would have been far more acceptable than dying in the laughable fashion in which he did in TLJ, especially if it came after a little dialogue with Luke that provided some backstory on his character.

- Lightsaber duels. This is what everyone loves about Star Wars. In the above mock plot, you have two - Snoke vs Luke, and Kylo vs Rey. In TLJ, we had a grand total of zero.
