In 1989 $15k was probably a good guess to put in a basic pool and fly out those who couldn't drive (he did say if there was any leftover). And a reasonable bonus for a guy in his position. But to add 20% was only another $3k and he flipped out over it.

McAllisters 100%

Their neighborhood is one of the most expensive in the nation, their house is much bigger than the Griswolds, they have more kids, they seem to always take trips on Christmas, they pay for Uncle Frank and his family to tag along, and when they realize Kevin was left behind there are absolutely no worries about the money it will take to get everyone short notice plane flights.

both lived in baller Chicago neighborhoods.
And both seemed to be made of money.

I'd give the edge to the McAllisters. Huge ballin' house in the Chicago suburbs, flys the whole family to Paris (with adults in first class) for Christmas. It's also possible that they just come from money, though, because in Home Alone 2 we learn that Peter's brother not only had a 3 story town home in Manhattan, but he also goes to Europe while it's being renovated.

McAllisters by far. Clark has almost gone broke in more than half the films over his hairbrained ideas. The McAllisters on the other hand flew 15 family members (First Class for the adults) on Peter's own dime to Paris for Christmas. No way in hell Clark could afford to do that when he was about to go broke putting in a pool.

McAllister's had more money. Easily.

Harry and Marv should have just gave up before entering the house and sued them for getting hurt on the property. Probably would have came out ahead over robbing.

McAllisters easily. The Griswolds live in a decent house in a nice suburb, but the McAllisters have a bigger, nicer house in Winnetka (one of the top 10 wealthiest towns in the country) a few blocks from Lake Michigan.

Clark is an upper middle class suburbanite. Peter McAllister is a North Shore baller.

The McAllisters practically live in a mansion. Their house is not just a large house...it's gigantic.

Let's be honest - they live in a mansion.

Clark lives in a nice home. By no means is it a mansion. Hell, I live in a house larger than the Griswold home.

Peter's wife doesn't work, Kevin used a credit card randomly and it never maxed out..

Didn't in the original story, the uncle hire the bandits to hit the house because he knew everyone would be gone? Sort of an inside job?

I believe in some early versions of the story, the uncle was in on the robbery. Which would make sense, his character was also a cheapskate and they played on it a bit but not as much as he was originally supposed to be.

I could be wrong but I feel that might be a fan theory from one of those "mind blown" clickbait articles.

The Mccallister's were multi-millionaires as others have said.

Just the Paris trip alone would have been somewhere in the $30K+ neighborhood I'm sure. Easily.

That house alone was at least a million dollar house.

Yeah the griswolds don't appear to come from money, look at the few relatives we get to see. Cousin eddie obviously is poor.
The house They leave the dead aunt was nothing fancy. She was broke as well when they were looking in her purse for money.

Clark is the most successful of the family which is why they host Christmas

I think at the heart of the story, it was about the importance of family. Had that happened it would have taken away from that. The other kids having to watch their father taken off to jail on Christmas day wouldn't be a "feel good" moment

We've talked about that in the "Overanalyze" thread, but I don't think that was ever in the script. It's just nuts like us that come up with that stuff.
