I can't get over how he botched the setup on that Jada/Concussion/slap bit

he even said "i fricked that joke up" in the special

I will agree that some of the bits were a few years too late.

This was my take through most of it. It was funny but too much of it was stuff others covered years ago. I enjoyed it mostly though.

You could tell he was nervous to go there, but he plowed through anyway.

Pryor/Murphy will forever be emblazoned on my brain, I love Chappelle too. I think I'll look back on Rock in a few years and feel the same way I do about those oldies.

Thats the risk of doing a LIVE special.

I know why he did it, because traditionally specials are filmed on multiple sets, for this very reason, but Rock knew he couldn't do this set multiple times and the content not leak out and thus people would already know the jokes.

He flubbed it, but the point is still the same.

except he had been doing that routing in clubs in preparation and the whole set leaked on twitter before the special.

Dave Chappele's comedy has ripened with age and now straddles art.
Big disagree on this one

Was really looking forward to this, but I guess my expectations was too high. It was just alright. Hell, you could even tell the crowd wasn't as into it. There were a couple of times he expected a reaction and didn't get one. I guess I've been spoiled lately as I've been on a Nate Bergatze kick.

same with me. i did laugh quite a bit and overall enjoyed it but it wasn't chappelle level.

Because a lot of what he talk about they have been gaslighted into thinking it is not okay to make fun of anymore. So the trans joke fell flat, the peaceful protest in the capital was a low hanging fruit and even that didn't get too many laughs. Even going the opposite way to be all for the sjw shite didn't get a laugh.

A lot of time he do his own weird laugh, like he told a joke and then laughed at it right away almost as if to prompt the audience but they didn't.

The only good part is his skit about his daughter and how he got her kicked out of school and will smith /jada pinket. Oh and Megan markle but he was soft on her.

It was meh for me. Some funny bits but nothing as good as his previous work.

I have tons of respect for Rock after hearing a round table of comedians on Rogan talk about how he’s the hardest working guy they know

He records every performance and watches it back that night and takes notes and writes 1 hour every day

Especially now that it's been refuted wholesale in light of the surveillance video coming out at long last.

This, but it also just had some awkward moments. Silence after a punchline, weird crowd shots, etc.

I used to watch his older stuff over and over again and it didn't get old. I can't see myself watching this one again ever.

I couldn't even finish it. Made it about 15 minutes and bailed.

Just tired, rehashed stuff.

Chapelle's older routines are way funnier, his new stuff has moments of humor, but the rest of it is basically a lecture. Trans this, trans that, white people suck, blah blah. It is all kind of tired and old.

I saw Chris Rock in 2010 at the Cellar do 30 minutes of material that he never even released and was probably testing out for the first time and it was very hit or miss but still so amazing to see. I'm not sure how many times he's even done the Jada joke.. most specials back in the day used to be filmed/recorded over 2 tapings because of things like this, watch a lot of comedy live... even the best can frick up a joke.

The first time I ever went to the Cellar there was a guy there who was filming an HBO special soon. So he was polishing up 20 last minutes of a basically finished act.

Follow that with Dave Attell walking up, putting a Walkman recorder onto the stool (this wasn’t yesterday), and doing 10 minutes of bullet points off of an index card so he could watch the crowd but listen to the delivery when he got home.

Seeing the beginning and end of the process that close together on the same night was fascinating.

Attell is almost universally recognized as the goat of the 20 minute spot sets (especially after 1 am)..
