I’m totally crushing on Christa McCauliffe’s back-up in the Teacher in Space Program, Barbara Morgan. She seems like the kind of teacher I would have been real sweet on when I was a kid.

I watched it for the first time a few weeks ago. Such a needless tragedy.

Lots of criminal negligence in that tragedy. To think that the night before, there was a vote by Thiokol executives and not one voted to tell Marshall Space Flight (Booster) to issue a no-go on the launch.

If I remember correctly, I think at one point, the pilot(s) pulled the two teacher astronauts aside and leveled with them that the space shuttle was more dangerous than NASA was willing to admit.

Yeah, well this is her when she finally did go into space on STS-118:

And more recent:

Sorry to crush your fantasy.

I remember there was a dude teacher candidate who was pressing hard for the position. He had his students contacting news sources to get his story out. I think his mistake was that he was banking on the fact that he looked like an astronaut. That's exactly what NASA didn't want. Another Mercury/Apollo looking white guy wouldn't stand out like a female teacher.

Age catches up with us all. She was still cute for 56 year old in 2007 (when she finally made her spaceflight).

I don't think little kid me would've thought she was cute back in the 80s either. But to each their own though.

I remember watching it explode while in school, as the teachers had paused class to pull out the TV and let us watch it.

Needless to say, having watched it actually happen as a child, I am unlikely to watch a special on it as an adult.

Around the time of the PMRC hearings in the 80s, John Denver was pushing hard to get on the Space Shuttle. I thought it was pretty selfish how hard he was trying. And IIRC on the same trip to DC for the PMRC hearings, he was also scheduled to meet with some Senators to get their support for the Shuttle trip. So when he showed up for the hearings, I think everyone expected him to kiss up to the Gores, since it might help him in his quest. But to a lot of people's amazement, he was strongly against the warning stickers after he experienced radio stations refusing to play Rocky Mountain High because they thought it was a song about drug use. He surprised the hell out of Dee Snider.

And of course he never did get on the Shuttle...

There's officially 4 "Where were you when you heard?" moments: Pearl Harbor, JFK Assassination, Challenger, and 9/11.

Of those 4, it was the Challenger explosion that was most seen live because schools were supposed to be watching it live as it happened. Something like 20 percent of the U.S. population saw it live. Possibly only rivaled by the impact into the second tower on 9/11, but even that was hard to see because it was 9:00 in the morning and while NBC, CNN, etc. covered the second plane live, most people still hadn't heard about the first plane.

Donny Osmond as well. Tipper thought she could seed the musician speakers with people on her side, but the milk and cookies boys didn't cross the picket line.

Nah. This is a 4 part documentary series on Netflix. Pretty good. 4/5 stars. You don't learn much new about the disaster, but the behind the scenes footage of the crew is pretty interesting.

That's cool. She seemed pretty cool herself. She seemed to be really gung-ho about her involvement in the program. I bet she was a nice person to know in life.
