When did this become the most popular thing to do? Disney had some huge hits without any big name celebrity voices (Little Mermaid, Beauty and Beast) then I know Robin Williams was Genie in Aladdin but rest of voices were no names and in Lion King they had Home Inprovement kid who was huge at time and James Earl Jones as the dad....

Now every character is voiced by a famous actor, musician, or sports professional. When did the take over happen and could you still have a great movie without the celebrity doing the voices?

$$$$$

They feel that's the only way people will go to those movies.

Stupid Hollywood.

Well if you think about it, they can work for probably a few days and get paid. Plus it's good for the movie makers to have bigger names, it's a win win

Well, maybe. I love the Disney/Pixar movies. And let's face it, can you really see anybody else voicing Sully, Mike and Randall in Monsters, Inc. other than John Goodman, Billy Crystal and Steve Buscemi? Hell, they even sort of caricature the characters like their real life voice counterparts. Ed Asner as Mr. Frederickson in Up and Christopher Plummer as Charles Muntz...I can't think of anybody else doing those voices.

And let's not forget that these people have very, very recognizable voices that fit the vision of the movie. That is also a factor. They are also really good at what they do.

Bolt is a good example of the other hand. Miley Cyrus voiced Penny and John Travolta did Bolt, but the other character voices I'd never heard of. And they were done pretty well.

Of course.

With Disney I think the point where they went from using non-celeb voice actors to celebrities was 101 Dalmations, with Rod Taylor. After that Sebastian Cabot was on board for the next two movies, the second of which was The Jungle Book, which used some semi-major players from movies and jazz.

Yes, absolutely. There is no question the celebrity voices get the public excited to see the movie.

Wonder what the over head cost would be to get lesser people as voices. Would movie then make more if properly promoted with a Justin Beiber doung the voice if a starfish or something lol

If it is a crappy movie, it will only make money the first couple of weeks. So an excited audience is a must. Audiences get excited over celebrity voices. A decent movie makes money by people wanting to go see it 3 or 4 times.
