Get ready to hate the trilogy. Rey and Ren are definitely cousins

That was kind of the entire point of the character. Some of you people are really dense.
Exactly. Kylo Ren was not Vader 2.0. In fact, he's the Anti-Darth Maul. Please describe Maul's character to me without describing what he looks like, what costume he wore, or what his profession or role in the movie was. Darth Maul is evil, relentless, and a badass, and that's as far as you can describe his character. I have no idea about any of his personality. Ren completely passes this test and I could describe him at least for 2 minutes without running out of things to say about the character. Plus unlike Maul's double bladed lightsaber, Ren's lightsaber tells us a whole lot about his character.

You are going to hate the rest of the trilogy... And how do people like you not understand that Star Wars is the story of the Skywalker family, of course they are going to be be related... That's why the galaxy feels "smaller than Baton Rouge" to you.

The movie was fun for me and the visuals were outstanding.
With that said, I was very disappointed in the movie basically having the same story line as the original - down to Vader (I mean Kylo) getting his hand sabered off.
I was just hoping for more than a redo - but I will go see the other two when they come out.

Seriously, what's with a of you just criticizing his looks?
The villain in the movie, especially in one as epic as the Star Wars saga, is supposed to be scary, ominous, foreboding. When I leave the theater feeling like I could bitch-slap the villain without fear or hesitation, there's a problem.
I was almost expecting Han to bend him over his knee and spank him with his own lightsaber and tell him to get his shite together, similar to how The Bride did to that wanna-be Crazy 88s kid in Kill Bill.

Why? Why not have a villain that starts off in a low place and develops into a ruthless monster as the series progresses?

That's fine, but he's going to need an awful lot of progression over the next two films in order for that to happen. I mean the guy already lost a light saber duel to a girl who had never even used a light saber before. Weak sauce.

That guy had just finished murdering his father and took the equivalent of a shotgun blast to the chest. I think him losing to Rey given the circumstances is understandable.

Why was Rey so powerful so quickly with "no training" - stronger than anything we saw from Luke on screen?
Why did Luke run and go into hiding?
What was the basis for Ren going dark?
What was the basis and cause for Ren and Han to fallout?
Why did Han and Leia split up? Ren?
Is Rey Luke's daughter? If not, who is she and why was she abandoned and by whom?
what is the significance of the island and the "original" Jedi temple?
Who is Snoke? Where did he come from? What is his motivation? How did he rise to power? How strong is he? He did he recruit Ben?
What really happened at the Jedi academy?
Why did Chewy ignore Leia after Han's death?
What is the First order's end game?
I could go on and on? Get my point?

If there were no prequels, most people would be pretty disappointed with TFA. Once people get over the excitement of it not being as bad as the prequels, they'll realize that it's not nearly as good as the OT.

They did briefly mention that he was training a pupil (assumed to be Kylo) and he turned Dark... Luke was ashamed and went into hiding.
The fact that Kylo was trained by alike and yet still got his arse handed to him by a girl with zero training makes it even more preposterous.... unless Rey turns out to be even stronger than her father and grandfather were.

I didn't hate it, but it was just meh. There were a lot of inconsistencies throughout the movie. I went in with no expectations due to only seeing the first teaser and not reading anything online about it. I rank it as follows:
V
IV
Any order
VI
VII
III
I/II

I feel it's pretty conclusively better than Return of the Jedi. Yes, the Throne Room scene was incredible, and Jabba was cool, but the rest of it is mediocre to the last degree. The characters aren't given as much to do, Han should have been killed off, the entire first act is really pointless and its own short film in and of itself, Vader only kills the main villain, the Ewoks blow, the end battle on Endor makes the Empire look simply pathetic, and they half arse it with yet another Death Star. The disparity between the Throne Room scene and the Battle of Endor is simply comical. It was a sign of things to come once Lucas took over.
While the Force Awakens is a clear apology for the prequels, it is also one for Return of the Jedi. It was a soft reboot, and it was telling us that they understood why these stories worked. The clear focus is on the new characters and making them seem like real people. Yes they do another Death Star, but I can see the point of it, and will likely have huge ramifications to Episode VIII's plot with the Republic being destroyed. It's also here to mak up for the lack of Han's death in the Original Trilogy, which is honestly pulled off better here than it could have been in the OT.
Go back and watch Return of the Jedi, be as honest and brutal about the film as you are with this, and then tell me it is better than it. I think it is simply a nostalgia factor people would put Jedi higher than this movie.

In all honesty, while I consider myself a fan of the Star Wars universe, I don't consider any of the seven films to be anything extraordinary. While I have enjoyed each of them to some extent, I've come to accept them for what they are rather than fool myself.

i didn't hate it
i felt it was decidedly mediocre
i saw it again 2 days ago and feel the same
the love is being fueled by emotions (namely nostalgia)

But he just pretty much got finished taking a shotgun blast to the chest and was highly distraught over murdering his own father; it is very much emphasized by both the Jedi and the Sith that emotional control is essential to being a good Force user. Kylo clearly doesn't have the later. He will be a far more threatening and ruthless opponent once he's properly trained by Snoke.

1) Her latent power is astonishing. She was also motivated by fear and anger, which is not insignificant. But we know where that leads.
2) Han explained this. He was full of guilt from what happened to his trainees. He also implied that Luke was a broken man.
3) This we will have to wait and see. But his character gives us some major hints. Watch it again and pay attention. There are a lot of layers with him in a few scenes, and each one teaches you something about him.
4) Han and Leia even had the freaking conversation. Yes it was Kylo turning dark. Were you taking a piss or something?
5) There are 5 or 6 things that point to Luke. But Maz tells her "You know the truth, those who you are waiting for will never return, but there is one for you to find in your future." -paraphrasing there a bit. I still think it's Luke, but I'm fine with them leaving this a mystery.
She was abandoned because of her power. This is another thing that leads to Luke. He couldnt take care of a child with where he was going, but knew she would be in danger anywhere but the middle of nowhere. Remember, he is from a desert planet too. He knows how the galaxy ignores them. Also, She has no idea what her family looks like, but can visually remember what the ship looked like when it left. She would remember what her family looks like who left her 2 minutes before taking off if her memory wasn't force wiped. Ren couldn't even find a face, even though he saw the same memory we did I not the flashback.
6) Luke will tell us, how could this movie tell us that when it's purpose was to find him? My guesses are he needed it's assurance, or he was hoping to find more information on the Force. Maybe both.
7) We will find out. Snoke's looks, and Plagueis being a Munn, makes it at least possible it's the same character. But I hope they arent.
Are you trying to ask why did he recruit Ben? He saw power, immaturity, and anger. I think it was obvious.
8) Kylo and his knights killed everyone? I got the feeling by him appearing with the Knights in the flashback, that he left to train with Snoke before returning to massacre everyone.
9) Chewie looked to be in shock. I thought it was fantastic acting for the character. Remember he is hundreds of years old, Han is probably not the first friend he has watched die. There was a war on his home planet after all. His body language told me he was in shock, and wanted to be alone. Might be his way of coping. I would say Leia ignored him more than he ignored her.
10) Uh, destroy the resistance. Dominate the galaxy? I mean...it was all kinds of obvious.
The only things in those answers that didn't come from information given in the movie, are from the other 6. Except for Plagueis' race.
I did give some answers I thought were heavily inferred. However, I think if you rematch it, less to watch it and more to really dig into things. You will see some of the same things I did.
For the record, I've watched the first act once online, and the whole movie once in the theaters. I did get lucky with some of the stuff I caught. They laid a lot of meat into this movie beneath the fluff. It's layered wonderfully.

Yeah you really didn't answer those questions in any meaningful way that advances the trilogy (most of what you said was pure conjecture actually). In fact, if your answers are the end to most of those questions, this movie was average. Example: Han and Leia split because Ben went dark? Ok...why? Did Leia pressure Han to send Ben to Luke and he not forgive her? Why would Ben's actions hurt their relationship unless there was an associated tension? What was the real story here? It seems like they had a REALLY flimsy relationship if Ben going dark just "ended it". Explore this question going forward (as Leia grieves for Han) to build depth and add subplots.
Keep a couple of things in mind:
1. We were TOLD a lot of things and shown nothing when it came to pure backstory. The OT did this too in ANH. Look how those questions were answered: with twists that furthered the central story of the trilogy.
2. There is so much left unsaid that creates fantastic material to actually move the plot along - why waste that on the answers you provided. Look at Rey, for instance, her "prodigy" like powers don't make sense based upon what we see ON SCREEN. And that is fantastically ok because that creates a question in the audience's mind (if you're being honest with yourself). That very question should be a central theme moving forward that is answered bringing us to the next stage in the story.

He didn't seem too distraught to me
Also did you notice how Finn and Rey took Han's death much harder than Leia did?
