So I have had several friends mention this movie to me over the course of the past year or so, in casual conversation usually while talking about Bruce whatshisname or other slap schtick comedy type movies. It never stuck until it happened again tonight.

They all liked the heck outta this movie.

So I just got home and can't seem to find it on Netflix or Amazon.

Is it worth buying and owning?

What are y'all's opinions on this movie? I value your opinions obviously.

Yes its great. Its about Elvis as an old man in a nursing home fighting a mummy. Its directed by Don Coscarelli who did the Phantasm series, Beastmaster, and John Dies at the End.

It's pretty entertaining. Really funny.

Be careful though. Years ago, I dreamed about some of it one night after watching it. Need to watch it again sometime, so I can tell whether some of the memories I think I have of it are the movie, or my dream.

I'd watch it if I were you. If someone asked me what the best nursing home movie was right now, I say it over Cocoon. Cocoon was an amazing movie when it came out, but just hasn't held up real well.

Bubba Ho Tep Trailer on Youtube

I'd never heard of Bubba Ho Tep until I saw it on some movie channel one night. Didn't know it was critically acclaimed until I hunted up this trailer just now, and no one had told me about it, so I didn't have high expectations.

I found it underwhelming given the talent involved (Bruce Campbell, Ossie Davis, director Don Coscarelli of Phantasm fame, etc.)

Mmm...

Bruce Campbell acts his arse off in this one. Seriously, the man deserves an Oscar for this. He juggles comedy and pathos like a champ.

Its a B movie but its a well acted and well written one.

Bonus points for Bruce doing a commentary track as Elvis.

Extra bonus points for Elvis talking about his cancer ridden pecker.

Its the best bad movie since Street Fighter.

It’s as cult & niche as it gets. Wish I could Kung Fu a link but no luck.

You can get the DVD for $5, so it's easily worth it IMO

I subscribe to the theory that it's all just regular people in a nursing home.

Elvis is no more Elvis than JFK is JFK. They're both senile old men who think they're Elvis and JFK, and think they're chasing a mummy around the nursing home because the movie is actually a sad reflection on growing old and being forgotten and coping with slowly losing your identify to senility and abandonment.

Elvis and Ozzie Davis plays President John F Kennedy

What’s not great about that.

It's a classic b movie that's extremely funny. It's well worth watching. So is John dies at the end for that matter.

I'd recommend it -- I even own it -- with the caveat that I love the movie...when I'm in the right mood. When not, I just can't seem to bring myself to watch it. In other words, it's one of those all or nothing type movies that could just as easily be love it or hate it, no in-between. I think it has something to do with that vague air of decay and ennui that permeates the cinematography and setting. Lots of earth tones and set dressing straight out of a depressing early '70s Midwestern dust bowl landscape. Makes for a difficult watch if you're hoping for something vibrant but a fun watch if you just want to see a quirky low-budget horror-comedy.

Let's get decadent!

God, I love this movie but hes... it is quite niche. You have to already love B-movies I think. And while I think the loss of identity of ordinary, senile old men left behind by everyone who loves them is the CORRECT reading, it is nowhere near as fun as thinking they removed JFK's brain and placed it in Ossie Davis. Besides, in a movie with ancient Egyptian ghouls sucking the life force from people... the real Elvis isn't that much of a stretch.

I've never seen the movie but I have read the short story by Joe Lansdale and it's pretty damn funny/spooky. I didn't realize they even made it into a movie.
