Imho, all three would have worked and brought something. Sam Rockwell would have been money too.

anyone have been a better fit for the Walter White role??

Ed O'Neil, when he was the same age he was when he played Al Bundy.

Too athletic, too handsome.

Cranston's appearance and posture as the show begins looks as though the weight of the world is on his shoulders. Walter needed to be a guy who'd blend into the scenery at parties, if he was somehow invited in the first place. Cranston looked like the guy nothing good ever happened to. It also helped that he looked like he'd outkicked his coverage by marrying Skylar.

He probably could have pulled off the acting and done really well with the role but he's just too physically imposing to fully pull it off like Cranston did.

He looks like he could beat Mike's, Victor's and Tyrus' asses with no problem.

I am watching Malcolm in the Middle again. Bryan Cranston is so good in that. Recommend that show to anyone.

Other than just fitting the role we have to remember how mesmerizing Cranston's acting was in that show. The scene where he lets Jane die was some of the most amazing acting I've ever seen in a TV show. Everything Walter White was and became was in Cranston's face in that one scene. Or the scene with him laying under the floor laughing hysterically after Skylar told him she gave the money to Ted. I was in awe the first time I saw that

Well, that wouldn't be an issue as I never thought Walter was intimidating. At all.

Walter was never intimidating in a, "This guy might kick my arse," kind of way. He was meant to be intimidating in a, "This man is an unhinged psychopath who is also highly intelligent and might be capable of anything," kind of way, and in that I think Cranston succeeded admirably.

Broderick would've been great but I doubt he'd have signed on for a lengthy role like that.

Cusack would've ended up going over the top.

While Cranston is the only legit perfect Walter White, I was thinking the exact fricking opposite of your post.

While I agree, I think he also could have made a PERFECT Saul Goodman.

Nic Cage would’ve been an awesome Walter White. Perfect combination of too crazy to mess with, but living a normal family life.

In reality, Ozark never exists and Jason Bateman plays the role. BB is better for it and we don’t have to watch a great start to a series crash and burn like Ozark.

Cranston was Malcom's goofy dad

That’s way underselling his performance in that show. He was pretty damn amazing and by far the best character/actor on the show.

. I don't think that anyone saw that career change coming.

Except Vince Gillian who directed him in an episode of the X-Files. I think it was called “Drive” maybe. His character thought he had some sort of implant in his head and that if he went under a certain speed it would kill him. So he was freaking out in the backseat of a car going crazy with a gun on the driver making him stay about that speed no matter what. VERY different role than Malcolm’s dad. Very intense performance.

Cranston was great and I can’t think of anyone better, but here are some other possible choices:

William Macy (Lundegard from Fargo)
Rob Corddry (Lou from Hot Tub Time Machine)
John Ortiz (Silver Linings Playbook, The Drop)

For the sake of the conversation…

Craig T Nelson

Robert Duvall

For some reason I wonder how Robin Williams would have done, rest his soul.

I never thought Cranston was a great actor, but my goodness he played WW to perfection! Sometimes I think Cranston sold drugs while filming.

Although he was perfect for Gus I could’ve seen Giancarlo Esposito portray Walter White just as well
