The persons who replace the "villains" Gus and Mike are Jesse and Hank. Not sure how much more interesting the villains can get.

i know you used quotes around villains, but mike was not a villain. mike was, essentially, gray matter, imo

Gus wasn't really all that bad either.

The insider podcast for the last episode is up.
Interesting, they go into alternative pitches that they didn't use. The 2 main ones, are Skyler killing herself at some point, and a long storyline coming off the original plan of having Jesse die at the end of Season 1. The latter "pitch" is wild, not sure how it'd be shown on television. Maybe HBO/Showtime, but not AMC.

Guys did carve a dude up like a jack-o-lantern while maintaining eye contact with Jesse and Walt.

This was the PERFECT ending for what most fans wanted, which was a measure of redemption. Walt truly wanted Jesse dead and taunted him with Jane's death. But when he saw Jesse enslaved he changed his mind and saved him. And they found a way to plausibly accomplish his ultimate ego-driven goal to make sure his family benefits from his dirty money, even if they didn't want it. Since he had cancer the expectation from the very beginning was that he was going to die, but the last episode, and the last moments with the music and the slightly satisfied look on his face, show that in the end, he won. But I'm in the minority that would have preferred a darker ending. Walt was a monster who murdered (directly and indirectly) many people, and with Hank's death he failed to completely protect his family. By giving him the redemptive ending the fans are manipulated to feel good that Walt was able to salvage some humanity. Fans should actually feel reflective about how they can feel sympathy for such a horrible character, but for the most part, that ain't gonna happen.

I'm not gonna lie. Watching that last scene again was awesome.

And Walt had Jesse murder Gale.

well, gus did have tomas slinging rocks, killing combo and eventually killed. among other things.
i can't decide which "villain" i enjoyed more, gus or todd. they were probably my favorite characters in the series.
also, the twins were fricking brutal. they creeped the frick out of me, even though i knew what i was watching was fiction. i ate a hole in a many a pair of draws when those two were on screen

The villains in the show are essentially the foils for walt. I.e., there are some villains in the show who are evil (the twins, tuco), but really to be a villain in this show is to be walt's antagonist. And that seems to be the point of the show to me; it's ability to manipulate its audience into that position.
Also I don't see Walt as a monster. This sort of sanctimonious reading of the show is really silly and goes against how you actually feel when you watch it.

Gus was a popular villain, but I think most people hated Todd. I'm like you though, I liked Todd and his dead-eyed Opie persona.
Actually one thing I really liked about the contrast between the Walt and Jessie characters was that Walt acted like he was a loving man looking out for his family, and even acted morally superior to Jesse concerning the dirt bike kid's death when he said that he was a parent and Jesse was not. But as partners in crime, look at their reactions to the same set of events. Walt got bolder and bolder, while Jesse became more haunted after each horrible death. Jesse had the normal reaction a human being should have, and it contrasted wildly with Walt's sociopathic tendencies. But Walt still seemed within the range of normal, as he was obsessed with leaving a legacy for his family. Then they introduced Todd, who took the idea of sociopath to the extreme. I liked having Todd's character in the show because people hated him, but I thought Walt was a worse human being. Walt knew right from wrong but didn't care that he was destroying so many lives. Todd was hardwired to not feel empathy for anyone. Although he needed to die, I didn't think of Todd as evil, because he was incapable of feeling guilt or empathy.

Perfect. I don't think they could have picked a better song.
Only one that comes to mind would be Suite Judy Blue Eyes...
I almost expected that song before Badfinger started.
It's getting to the point
Where I'm no fun anymore
I am sorry
Sometimes it hurts so badly
I must cry out loud
I am lonely
I am yours, you are mine
You are what you are
You make it hard

Don't have anywhere near the time to read this thread but had to weigh in since I've never been this invested in a tv drama. Honestly, I thought the series was over with the plane collision/floating eye..and would've been fine with that. Then I found out it was getting continued and stayed completely hooked. Gilligan & crew just slayed it again and again.
The finale was everything I could've wanted. Walt turned up his "I'm smarter than you & will outmaneuver you" a whole notch to get everything in order. The only (and this is like bitching about the car your supermodel girlfriend drives) issue I had was that Walt catching his old partner on TV was a little farfetched. Only say that since he could've just as easily read it in that stack of newspapers.
Anyway, Ima miss the hell out of the show.

No dude, Walt became a monster. Over a dozen murders, poisoning children, rampant manipulation to serve his own ends. The fact that you pull for him in spite of that is a credit to the writers and Cranston.

Pffft. Most of the people Walt killed or had killed were cretins, anyway. Majority of them were murderers themselves or would have no reservations about committing one.

walter white is Dexter's real father

I'm not a "Team Walt" guy. On the other hand, I think calling Walt a "monster" rings false for most people for the very real reason that his sins are not all that monstrous. Monstrous consequences--often.
The simple fact is that you WERE going for him in the last episode.

So what? It's not like he was Batman on a quest to clean up crime. He became just as bad as those he killed. He loved the power trip and was willing to do whatever he had to do to keep it going.

Skyler killing herself at some point
Yeah, just listened to that and it was going to be in the last few episodes. Makes sense because of the lack of wedding ring for Walt and the name Lambert. They backed off of that, thankfully, and used Walt's weight loss to explain why he took the ring off and put it around his neck.
As much as people dislike Skyler that last scene between Walt and Skyler was the best in the series, and #2 is their phone call with the DEA listening in. Anna Gunn's Emmy was well deserved.
