Bob Iger Confirms the Next Star Wars Film Will be From D.B. Weiss and David Benioff

While speaking at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit today, Walt Disney Company chairman Bob Iger confirmed that the next Star Wars film following The Rise of Skywalker will be from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, coming in 2022.
“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for Game of Thrones, and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” Iger said. “And we’re not saying anything more about that.”
Last year, Disney announced that Benioff and Weiss would be writing and producing a new Star Wars series, which would be separate from the Skywalker saga. During his discussion, Iger only discussed the “next movie,” not a possible trilogy or series, so it’s unclear whether Benioff and Weiss are still working on a series, if they’re only doing one film, or if there will be another standalone film in between. This also leaves the future of Rian Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy uncertain, as we still haven’t heard when (or if) the first film in that previously announced series will debut.

This is what the MTV board’s favorite person had to say on them:
quote:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

And Rian Johnson, right?
How many open DIS shorts are out there?

I could see it working for them.
Their simple arse spaghetti dinner dialogue is much better suited for Star Wars

Just give me a KOTOR movie. They have proven they can excel adapting an established story and KOTOR is the GOAT.

Instead of lightsabers, they will wield glowing wieners.

I only every played the first one, but it was great.
Also, Jedi Knight with Kyle Katarn was great, but Rian Johnson ruined the Jedi Order, so we won't see something in that realm.

Let’s hope they adapt existing source material for their script. They’re good at that.

Does this mean Rian is out? If he’s not first up it seems like it’s inevitable.

No. Rian has a trilogy about God knows what and D&D have a trilogy that is rumored to be in the Old Republic.

I know. Just seems like his would be first. Since you know he was announced way before D&D. And with the Star Wars pace being lowered. From Disney’s new plan.

If Episode 9 sucks like Last Jedi Star Wars will have a lot of work to do to get in the good graces of the regular populace. The movies won't be making over a billion dollars regularly. Their profits will be more like Solo.

This, and Johnson's trilogy are supposed to be separate from the Skywalker saga. I actually think both films will be good because of that.

quote:Yep, if they don't fall into the "subvert expectations for the sake of doing it" mode, they're still doing a qood job with GoT. The biggest complaint is that it's becoming a visual action show, and losing the deep and subtle nuances Martin started off with.
I could see it working for them.

Martin said GoT is supposed to go against fantasy tropes, and the show is still doing that... the predictable ending would have been Good King Jon and Good Queen Dany ruling justly. They've struggled with the twists, but making Dany bad after 7 seasons of presenting her as a hero will do that.
They convinced us she was good when Tyrion and then Jon embraced her, they kept her good as late as ep 1 of this season, and the turn bad has been done poorly.
If you avoid those nuances in Star Wars and go back to the simple Good/Bad dynamic for most roles, and focus on the visual approach, D&D are near the top of the game right now. GoT LOOKS magnificent.

Why are everyone's "lightsabers" now limp and floppy?

They would actually be perfect for this.

I just found out that David Benioff wrote X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Yeah. He's gonna do great.
