You're probably right. It just seems in a TV-viewing sense, it'll be hard to keep characters like Lucky, Meyer, and AR fairly static for the vast majority of the show's run. I'm sure they'll find some way though. I'll be interested to see how they ally Lucky and Masseria.

We learned last night that Nucky reads. The only way he would be familiar with the term Munchkin is if he had read the Frank Baum book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

He wouldn't have heard it as a child since he was a grown man before Baum wrote the book.

My wife asked how he would know the word in context to small people, as he used it last night, when the movie won't be made for another 16-17 years.

Its not likely a man with no kids would have read such a book. Its more likely the writers screwed up.

Good catch

I only watch the show on a semi-regular bases. I've missed numerous episodes. Has there ever been a scene where he was reading from the book to the two kids living with him now?

That could be an explanation. Otherwise it would be difficult to expalin his use of the word.

Were there dominatrix hookers in the 1920s?

Good question. My guess is that sexual fetishes have been around for a very long time.

But I don't know when women discovered the ability to profit from this one.

Correct. He was in their living room reading Oz. Can't remember which episode.

Thanks. That would explain it.

Frank Baum is Nucky's assistant Kessler.

If memory serves, the book was made into a play early on and was well received during its time. Not too far out of the ordinary to think a word like that could become prevalent in colloquial conversation 20 years after the book's publication.

I just looked it up and you are correct. The book was made into a play in 1902.

He was already pissed off about Nucky blowing him off, then his wife didn't cook what he wanted for dinner. That and his son was mouthing off about him not being able to read.

They're just setting the stage for him to go crazy, and get revenge.

few pages back.....another reason I hate season long threads. But I digress.

Think they are just setting him up to explode. Chaulky felt he wasn't even getting respect in his own house, which set him off.

Pretty much. He has no control in his work life because of Nucky who is condescending towards him because of race. He has no control in his family life either (he can't even pick what to eat!) and is disrespected (in his mind) based on race again. He's tired of being disrespected and seems to be realizing his outward attempts to be appear sophisticated (nice suits, acting like he's reading when he can't) are pointless. He won't change people's perception of him with those methods. It will probably lead to him taking drastic action.

Agree.... and it will take one of two directions: 1. The end of Chalky White, and you know how it will go.
2. I could see him teaming up with Jimmy, selling his goods to NY, etc.

I don't think Chalky will be offed anytime soon. The Jimmy link is interesting. The Commodore obviously would never have accepted Chalky's help, but I suppose Jimmy is a different man.

Chaulky seems to gain the most now that Mickey's warehouse was blown up. I could see him and Jimmy teaming up to deliver the goods he promised in Philly.

The Chalky family storyline is the only one that doesn't ring true. to me There's such a gulf between who he is and who is wife and kids are that it just doesn't seem plausible that they are all part of the same family.
