I’m curious about how much of it was performative vs how much was an authentic descent into madness.

I just started it after reading some of this thread and laughed out loud with the "sock puppet". I may not agree with some of the topics but I appreciate it so far. Will update later.

my favorite one.

His initial reaction he was going through deeply about labor exploitations and then his reaction to his reaction; "This is actually a stupid song and doesn't actually mean anything, For some reason I have this dire need to seem intelligent" had me dying

I mean this is a really funny special and a great piece of satire. I enjoyed it and Bo is very talented but yall are ridiculously overhyping it. It’s certainly not “the greatest work of art in a century” as someone said. And it not some super important piece of cerebral perfection. It’s just a well done comedy special by a talented guy who spent months on it.

And anyone who thinks that special is in anyway “woke” or even political is just an idiot. It’s very clearly a piece of satire.
It was hilarious though.

I couldn’t catch my breath after the company wokeness part.

I mean what do you stand for! What do you support! WHO ARE YOU…. bagel bites?

It’s no longer… will you buy wheat thins.

It’s will you help wheat thins… with their fight… against lime disease.

You can hide and bury your head in the sand and hope it fixes itself...or, you can roll up your sleeves and get to work.

And sell Butterfingers.

I’m not sure why you decided to rely to me about overhyping it, my post was pretty grounded

Just another night alone. On my own. One hand on my dick and one hand on my phone.

The Internet was made for nights like these.

Send me a picture of your titties.

This was pretty good. His humor is different but I enjoyed it. I also enjoy satire music so it's not surprising. I feel like some of his bits were like the tears of a clown because that's how I felt at a few points in the last year or so.

Since someone said to rank them: here's my rankings of the songs from Spotify. I omitted the songs less than a minute long, though.

I think the Goodbye song is really well done, but I love songs that mash-up others from a musical, so obviously I would like that one.

Just finished it. I'm gonna have a long post on it tomorrow, but I'm leaning more towards the one of the best performance pieces ever camp. This one needs a lot of unpacking, but I thought it was fantastic and horribly depressing.

I thought “Problematic” was brilliant; calling out these mostly-celebrity performative apology posts for exactly what they are: attention-seeking non-apologies disguised to look like contrition. I think maybe there’s a secondary underlying real apology for some (“vaguely shitty”) stuff he regrets saying in the past (?), but the overall message is hey look at all of these people bending over backward to “apologize” for things to gain internet points from the wokesters out for their pound of flesh at any given moment. Juxtaposing the apology with the attention-seeking “look-at-me” imagery, culminating in the crucifix imagery, was a nice way to frame the issue IMO.

Also, this verse was great:
quote:

I want to show you how I'm growing as a person, but first
I feel I must address the lyrics from the previous verse
I tried to hide behind my childhood, and that's not okay
My actions are my own, I won't explain them away
I've done a lot of self-reflecting since I started singing this song
I was totally wrong when I said it
Father, please forgive me, for I did not realize what I did
Or that I'd live to regret it

This special really was incredible and the people saying it wasn't funny were really probably just expecting something way different. I know I was, but I got sucked in and taken for a ride the whole time.

I honestly think he started out thinking this would be a much "lighter" special akin to some of his past work. It really almost flips a switch at the intermission. I also really wish we could get time stamps of what dates in 2020-2021 he was recording certain songs. That would probably be very telling as to why the undertones of some of his songs are the way they are.

For example, Healing the world with comedy, FaceTiming with my mom, and WW Instagram all seem like his classic comedy type songs that are poignant especially during the beginning of lockdown.

That’s how the world works, Brand consultant, and “Is it necessary?” / “Shut the frick up” all seem like direct reactions to George Floyd and BLM.

It would not surprise me at all if the Funny feeling guitar song was a direct reaction to Jan 6.

To the people saying, "woke boy", you didn't watch the same thing I did. He is not trying to be woke at all as he takes digs at all sides that he sees as damaging to the social fabric. I think he's spot on.

It's hard to know how much is produced or how much he is actually letting us in to see his real struggles with mental beth and depression. The knife part was pretty disturbing. It honestly would not surprise me to open the news one day and see "Bo Burnham found dead from parent suicide". Sadly, he fits the mold for the tortured artist. This is definitely his magnum opus.

His takes on the internet and social conditioning are perfect and spot on.

I'm not an artsy person, but damn. This really affected me and made me think about the current state/past year in a totally different way.

This special was incredible, absolutely fantastic. Bravo, Bo.

I’d love to know when he started writing the Jeff Bezos songs and how many he wrote that we didn’t get to see.

I have to imagine that those songs were inspired by every item in that room being supplied by Amazon

I didn't come to the same conclusion about Bo as you did. I think it's just Bo being Bo. It's not too far fetched to say that he was exaggerating the depression a bit for effect and commentary. Just my optimistic thoughts though.

Maybe not. But it is artful. It has something to say, and it stays with you. This is a guy, born on the internet (youtube/vine) reflecting on his place in the world, how the society is shaped by the internet, all with the isolation of the pandemic as the backdrop.

I didn't know Bo Burnham outside of the "Panderin'" song but I thought this was impactful.

It's a different kind of comedy special. A sort of madness, one-man-musical stage comedy/tragedy.

I love it.

How has no one talked about being locked down and contained to a room for over a year part. Thought it was really well done.

I forget exactly, but you hear come out with your hands up at some point. He walks outside and can't get back in. Then the perspective turns and him and people are laughing that he went outside. Basically mocking people for going outside and socializing when they could be at home safe and plugged in.

Well that’s the point of why it’s so great..you can’t honestly tell if he is truly depressed or it’s just part of the piece. I’d suspect both. The anxiety part was real, and he finally decided to go back to stand up then COVID. Probably pretty damaging to someone who is clearly intelligent but mentally fragile.
