Black people make up less than 20% of the US population. To point to them and declare that they inflated box office numbers is just silly and false. Almost every person I know, white, black, asian, Hispanic, etc., has seen the movie. Its really good and it was honestly the only decent movie out for the past few months. It just hit at the right time..

The Colored Panther

Negro Pather would have been acceptable to the good folks at the United Negro College Fund.

Person of Color Panther would have been acceptable to the NAACP, universities across the country and SJWs everywhere.

He's definitely not black.

I would have gone with Mocha Panther.

I posted the numbers in this thread. They did inflate the numbers by a pretty substantial amount.

Exactly how many of the MCU movies does one need to have seen in order for it to be ok to want to see a movie about a character you know nothing about?

For it to be ok? None.

For it to make real sense given everyone on Earth, whether you've seen them or not, knows that these movies ALL tie into each other and are telling a long form story...? At least Civil War so that you have a slight understanding of the character you're going to see. Your mileage may vary.

quote:

How do you know he didn't go b/c he liked what he saw in the trailers?

Because I know him? When he's not taking selfies he's posting pictures of whatever eclectic record he's listening to so that followers can comment on how eclectic his tastes are. After everything the MCU has had to offer up in terms of great previews and huge stars, there was nothing in the trailers that would have given THIS 35 year old white guy with no attachment to the MCU a reason to go opening night and pass on the others other than to be seen by who he knew would be in the theater...and of course his selfie taken in the theater surrounded by black movie goers.

Again...I love the genre and really do want to see it before Infinity Wars...but I'm invested in all of it. I'm going regardless.

The point was that while it's fantastic this movie has done so well, pretending it's solely because it's the greatest spectacle ever misses part of the "why." Being aware of the "why" isn't a shot at the movie, it's being informed.

It's a fair thought actually. Just see the past couple of elections.

Did you miss my point entirely?

No. You specifically mentioned an issue with the name of the movie. The movie is named for the character, just like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, etc.

quote:

Black Panthers is also the name of a militant black political party. There's something called subliminal suggestion going on here. You think Marvel didn't know what they were doing creating this character and naming him that?

The Black Panther Party was formed in Oct. 1966. The comic book character debuted July 1966.

From Stan Lee, "It was a strange coincidence because at the time I did The Black Panther, there was a political party in the country - mostly black people - and they were called the Black Panthers. And I didn’t think of that at all! It had nothing to do with our character, although a lot of people thought there was some tie-in. And I was really sorry - maybe if I had it to do over again, I’d have given him another name, because I hate that confusion to be caused. But it really had nothing to do with the then-existing Black Panthers."

ETA: I see others have already made the same point as me. I didn't miss your point. Releasing it in the middle of Black History month was probably great marketing, sure. The name and race of the character almost certainly caused people to go see the movie who otherwise would not have. Is anyone arguing that? But the naming of the character, and thus the movie, was not marketing. So why did you feel the need to point it out?
