First it was "this movie won't make all that much b/c white people won't see it and black people will only go once if at all."

Now it's "well of course it made a shitload of money b/c all the black people and comic books fans went to see it."

Come on. It's a Marvel movie. At this point in the history of the MCU, they have a certain baseline. This movie had less than a zero percent chance of bombing.

This is called moving the goalposts. We've now gone from "it's so obvious that one of the main reasons it did well is because of all dem blacks" to "black cast...make[s] a difference to some people." People in this thread aren't arguing that it made a difference to some people, they're arguing that a significant reason for its success is the fact that there are a lot of black people in it. That could, in fact, be true. But nobody has offered a shred of proof in that regard. Citing people praising its cast isn't proof unless you can account for $1.2 billion dollars by showing these people spent all that money.

A number of the commenters haven’t seen the movie. That tells you something. I saw the movie twice. It was one of the better super hero movies I have seen. There were a couple of cringe worthy lines but it’s definitely worth seeing.

Trivia:

After Jack Kirby and Stan Lee realized that there was a militant group named The Black Panthers, they changed the character's name to Black Leopard. That didn't click as well, so they changed it back.

The hero from a mainstream continuity that's happens to be black and is not named Blade or Steel.

LINK

You got me curious enough to google. The first link was this article citing much higher black turnout.

Here is another LINK
Usually 15% of a comic book movie but were 37% of the audience for this movie. Not surprising.

Replace the black characters with Aliens?

Hmm.. like Avatar?

I mean Avatar had ground breaking CGI that made it unique.

What makes Black Panther so much different than say X-Men?

Oddly enough it’s also the lowest grossing movie in terms of concession sales.

The dollar stores across the street from the theaters are doing very well, however.

Guilty as charged. I got a big bag of candy and a bottled water from the store to snack on in the movies. I hardly ever buy concessions in the movies.

What happened to all the poliboard posters saying they were boycotting this movie because it was racist and SJW propaganda.

I'm still blown away by how well it has done. It was a good movie that did not disappoint. I just don't want folks to starting to overrate the movie, calling it the best superhero movie ever. In reality it is nowhere even close.

Gotta be careful with numbers for comics.

Diamond helps Marvel do its push through so it looks like stores ordered a lot while stock warms the shelves.

Everyone is hiding their online sales which is rumored to be plateaued.

DC does shenanigans too of course but LCS's have been attacking back at Marvel for 3 or 4 years now.

Did you miss my point entirely?

Black Panthers is also the name of a militant black political party. There's something called subliminal suggestion going on here. You think Marvel didn't know what they were doing creating this character and naming him that?

It's like calling Iron Man "White devil"

I know you want to try hard on this and Stan Lee loved to unashamedly grab whatever he could to promote the House of Ideas (X-Men beating Doom Patrol to the stands), but c'mon.

Again, missing the point entirely.

There is a Black Panther party, it just so happens to be founded the same year.

Are you trying to say you don't think a movie called "Black Panther" was seen by a bunch of African Americans?

The name alone attracted them, and no I'm not "trying hard" that's common fkn sense.

You're placing too much on race on this. A lotta white folks and a lot of black folks like BP. But the concept of a big studio not making a gag movie or based on a comic as an after thought is new. Of course more blacks will get up to see a hero that looks like them. And there isn't anything wrong with that. The thing here is Black Panther is living in your mind as a bunch of thugs instead of a comic character who has had pretty good runs over the years.

The big news here is Marvel Studios has to be breathing a sigh of relief as other actors contracts run out. They might have a new Iron Man to tent pole here if Carol goes south.
