It had to happen at some point and this was the weekend that saw Black Panther's streak as the #1 film at the weekend box office come to an end at the hands of Pacific Rim Uprising. That being said, it wasn't a down weekend for Black Panther at all as it became the highest grossing superhero film of all-time, topping The Avengers with a domestic cume that now totals $630.9 million, becoming one of the top five domestic releases of all-time.

Domestic: $630,916,236 51.0%
+ Foreign: $606,400,000 49.0%
= Worldwide: $1,237,316,236

The real issue is that a character most people only heard of two weeks before the release date is the highest grossing superhero movie in the country, while over at DC you have Justice League featuring the two most popular superheroes of all time becoming the lowest grossing DC movie ever.

It is supposedly a very good movie, although I have not seen it, but reality is that it’s success has more to do with it being a black super hero moreso than being a good/great movie. That said, kudos to Marvel for finding that demographic. There are plenty of people that will watch this movie, whether they are black or not, just for the point of saying they supported a movie about black super heroes.

I assure you a huge bulk of them won’t watch infinity wars unless it is stated that Black Panther plays a key role in saving the universe.

In the end, quality of movies means very little. Hell, Titanic wasn’t even a good movie, but it grossed so much because people got obsessed with the fad that was watching it multiple times.

Also, most of these movies don’t even touch top 10 status if you adjust for inflation. It is like top 30 if you adjust for inflation with “Gone with the Wind” at 3x as much ($1.8 billion). Hell Dark Knight and Avengers are ahigher when adjusted for inflation just 10 years later.

Also virtually no competition for 6-8 weeks.

Release it in May and it's a different story.

This is a weird narrative that people keep pumping up, but makes no sense. If Black movies were destined to be such money makers, then why aren't Tyler Perry movies blockbusters. If its just Super Hero ones, how about Blankman and Undercover Brother (both funny as hell movies). Its just a good movie, with interesting characters that hit at the right time. The black thing has never applied to any movie ever, so why would it matter now?

This movie was marketed like a milestone in black culture. It was built up to be the Jackie Robinson of superhero movies. Blade was a big hit but no one cared he was black. The social media build up for this movie is like no other black movie before it.

Also massive busing from schools apparently.

Schools playing hookey and busing kids to the movie during school days?

Wasn't there also a bunch of GoFundme...to pay for kids to go see the movie?

This became some social movement I suppose. So it's no surprise it has topped the BO.

We only got a museum once a year. No school was taking us to see Return of the Jedi.

I'll fill you a secret. In Opelousas the Mayor and other government officials have been buying out the theater since release bringing school children and whatnot selling out the theater literally every day as a black pride thing. Couple that with it releasing "literally" in the exact middle of black history month should be all you need to know. (Kudos to Marvel marketing team, don't even get me started that the movie is called "BLACK PANTHER" )

Also entire school classes in that town have been getting to see it on some local business owners dime. This is all true.

Pretty much all you need to know. If that's happening in a small town imagine places like Baltimore and DC, ETC

Yeah I'm calling BS on that whole statement. You are claiming they have bought out the theatre every day for over a month in the tiny town of Opelousas, La. So that a handful of schools in the Parish can watch it?

Well, it was a real thing:

I'm not making this up.

The "Black Panther Challenge" Has Raised More Than $750,000 For Kids To See The Marvel Film

quote:

PRINCIPALS TO TAKE THEIR ENTIRE SCHOOL TO SEE BLACK PANTHER

I mean that's going to inflate BO #s. Just stating the obvious when you make a movie mandatory scholastic viewing.

DALLAS AREA KIDS GET FREE TICKETS TO BLACK PANTHER

RALEIGH, N.C. KIDS GET FREE TICKETS TO BLACK PANTHER

Etc. It's all over the country.

So it's no surprise that it is the highest grossing.

Who isn't going to see a free movie that is supposedly good?
