Whiplash losing Best Picture to Birdman
Nick Nolte losing Best Supporting Actor (Warrior) to Christopher Plummer (Beginners)
Mickey Rourke losing Best Actor (The Wrestler) to Richard Jenkins (The Visitor)
Both Tom Hardy (The Revenant) and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) losing Best Supporting Actor to Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies)

What are some others?

I swear if Whiplash was directed by Christopher Nolan it would get more threads here than Star Wars and Marvel combined.

Jake Gyllenhaal not even getting an Oscar nomination for Night Crawler. Gyllenhaal gave a legendary all-time great performance that was drawing comparisons to De Niro’s work in Taxi Driver. It should have been a no-brainer nomination. Instead, the Academy decided to give Bradley Cooper a third consecutive Oscar nomination for American Sniper instead. The fact that Bradley Cooper has four Oscar nominations while Jake Gyllenhaal only has one is absolutely criminal.

Having seen both films, while Saving Private Ryan is better it really wasn't THAT big of a snub. Shakespeare in Love is a very fun, well-acted, and well-written rom-com set in the Elizabethan era.

The bigger snub that night was Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) losing Best Actress to Gwyneth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love).

The biggest snub in that particular category within the last 20-30 years is Crash beating the other four films nominated for Best Picture.

I was actually okay with this one, even though Warrior is a much better movie.

None of these three should have been within sniffing distance of a nomination. Hardy, especially, is a joke in The Revenant. Horrible category that year.

I'll second both the Tom Hanks (Castway) and Mickey Rourke (The Wretsler) snubs.

The one that stands out For me in recent memory

Leonardo DiCaprio in Django Unchained as Calvin Candie ... one of his most memorable and best performances of his career not even nominated. Waltz was overrated in that movie. Almost the same exact characterizations as Hans Landa.

Another one that always baffled me

Daniel Day Lewis as Bill the Butcher losing to Adrien Brody in the Pianist. Hard to believe a legendary performance like that lost to a very forgettable one

Adrien Brody crushed that role. Are you serious? The Pianist was a better overall film as well. Bill the Butcher was a layup role that many people could have played, not that DDL didnt do an incredible job with it like he does with everything. But Szpilman surviving the Holocaust and the depth of emotions that had to be portrayed was a far more difficult role

Yep, I agree with you wholeheartedly. The Pianist was a far superior film to The Gangs of New York and when you have two equally great performances, they'll always go for the performance in the better film. Brody definitely earned that Oscar win.
