Best western movie is hard to pick but the best western is Lonesome Dove. Can’t classify it as a movie since it was a miniseries but nothing in the theater comes close.

1. Once Upon a Time in the West
2. The Wild Bunch
3. The Searchers
4. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
5. Tombstone
There are about ten westerns I might put in spots 6 through 10 on any given day but my top five are consistent with the exception of switching 2 and 3 around from time to time.

Most of the great ones have been listed in this thread. One that never seems to get mentioned that has always left an impression on me was Tom Horn. Steve McQueen and Linda Evans were very good together. The cinematography was sparse and beautiful and the film was understated if not barren by today's standards. Watched it many times but have not seen it in at least 20 years. It has probably been enough time for a watch with fresh eyes.

Silverado was fun, but cartoonish.

Tombstone and Open Range were more appealing to me…

So now it’s edgy to hate on Tombstone lol…people are so funny.

It's not new or edgy to have problems with considering Tombstone a top western of all time. Purists have always had problems with it.

I love it. It's endlessly watchable for me. But it definitely has some pretty glaring issues.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Beyond just westerns, its one of the greatest films of all time.

Truth. It's a bit like It's a Wonderful Life in the sense that you need to be a little bit older to appreciate it. But its more than a western the same way IAWL is more than a christmas movie.

Lonesome Dove

This ^

Has to be on every top 5 list if not #1. They should think about rebooting this as a 2 part movie and make it at least PG-13. Although I don't know how you can outcast Tommie Lee Jones and Robert Duvall.

If Lonesome Dove counts then that's your answer. If we are going strictly on the big screen I couldn't even pick one, the Hollywood has done the western genre surprisingly well. That said best film western probably had Harry Carey Jr in a supporting role!

By in large Hollywood has done Westerns and Mob movies well and they seem to recycle actors in those genres. Not sure if it's any correlation, just kinda interesting.

I prefer the classics and most of them have been mentioned. But there have been a few great modern westerns as well.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
The Proposition
Appaloosa

The western genre has made a nice comeback lately with mini-series as well.

I always recommend westerns from director Anthony Mann specifically the ones he did starring Jimmy Stewart.

The Naked Spur
The Far Country
Bend of the River
Winchester '73
The Man from Laramie

And one he did starring Gary Cooper is also really great,

Man of the West

Tombstone and Unforgiven are probably the most "rewatchable" for me. If either of them are on, I'll pretty much watch them - any others, it depends on my mood.
