I didn't mean cerebral in the sense that The Wire is a more intelligent or precise account of anything in particular. Just that its insights deal with the complexity of societal structures and institutions - people fulfilling professional roles, whereas I think Six Feet Under is a much more visceral exploration of the intricacies of personal relationships and fulfilling our most basic roles as humans and family members. I guess I intended "cerebral" as sort of a pejorative, meaning that The Wire was cold and stark and didn't emotionally engage me even though I thought its stories were fascinating.
ETA:
That was such a cruel episode... it comes out of nowhere and drags you behind it for 50 minutes. The guy who played the carjacker should have been a kill-of-the-week on Dexter. Such a creepy portrayal of a violent, insane psychopath.

Though I think it's greatest episode was That's My Dog, which isn't cerebral at all.

Friday Night Lights
Very underrated show.
Never heard much about it.
Just started watching it on Netflix and I'm on season 3. Great storylines and lots of different shite going on keeps you watching.
There are some tearjerking moments too.

I'd agree with this.

Don't think I saw it listed but arrested development trumps everything listed here including the wire.
This.

Seinfeld fricking blows. I have never understood the love for it. I don;t think Ive ever laughed one time and Ive watched multiple episodes trying to find a reason to like it.

West Wing deserves a mention

I'm going with The Andy Griffith Show.

It should be just split up in categories. Best Comedy, Best Drama series, etc. of all time, that way there is less (not a whole lot), but less arguing shite like Seinfeld and The Wire, which couldn't be further apart on the spectrum.

The Wonder years....Every member of the family could watch together and everyone would have someone to relate too...Without question the best "family" show of all time and my vote for number one over all...
FNL would be up there but the story-line got fricked up by the writer's strike. The mexican linebacker just vanished with no explanation (his name escapes me). The whole Landry murdering that guy was an attempt to boost ratings imo. That being said, this show is in my top 5 for sure.
Sopranos is badass....

I'll never understand all the love that Seinfeld gets. It's decent, but it's also the most overrated show of all-time IMO
That is pretty much my take. Jerry Seinfeld is a terrible actor and it was impossible to give a rats arse about any of the characters really. Kramer was cool and George was amusing (parents too) but overall I was pretty indifferent about whether to watch it or not.
While it was short lived and recent I'd go with Arrested Development. MASH and the Simpsons have a strong case for overall quality and longevity. South Park is another candidate; it is hit or miss but can be absolutely brilliant. Breaking Bad has the potential to win this in a few years but it is difficult to see the series making it that far; they are painting themselves into a corner but it will be interesting to see how they finish things.

The Wire and Californication are my favorite 2 shows.

Fawlty Towers.
It's the only TV showt that would litterally make me laugh out loud on a regular basis.

Personally, I haven't watched a television series on a regular basis since MASH and the original Saturday Night Live. (I even saw all the original Star Trek episodes when first broadcast.)
