Why would they remake this?

This is what Hollywood deserves for trying to remake classic Charlton Heston movies.

Honestly I think the sad part is Kubo is only on track to make 12 million. It's fricking excellent and one of the best movies this year. The effort that went into it is astounding.

It might be great, but I also wasn't sold by the trailer.

My question is...who the hell gave this movie a $100+ budget???? Or even green lit this piece of shite in the first place.

Studio exec: Hey I know what everyone has been clamoring for...A Ben Hur Remake!

Accounting Exec: well, that sounds like a good idea, since the big Tarzan remake was so successful last month!. ... So who are we casting in it.

Studio exec: well we've got a ton of mediocre British, C level TV actors, one is John Huston's grandson, you know the dude with half a face from Boardwalk Empire...oh and Morgan Freeman!

Accounting Exec: oh wow, John Huston's grandson, he's such a HUGE star now...oh and you got that guy nobody liked from RocknRolla ...and Morgan fricking Freeman!!.....Here's $100 million and another $50+ million for an ad campaign!!

Studio exec: Man this is just too easy, now I can redeem myself for John Carter!!

Nothing captures the Roman Empire quite like the vintage line: "ARE WE HAVING FUN NOW BROTHER!?"

This movie was produced to appeal to Christians and numerous celebrity pastors were brought on board to shill for it. When I first saw the ads, it struck me that they were not marketing this angle. I guess they were doing so just not to people like me (the only ads I saw were during the olympics).

I think it is an interesting comparison with the Noah flop. I think it bombed in part because religious folks didn't like where it strayed from the Bible and nonreligous people couldn't give a dry fart about the story.

BenHur was always an odd one for me.

If they were marketing it as a religious movie they sure fooled me, I saw no hint of it. The only reason I knew it was remotely religious is because I've seen the Heston version with Jesus in it...even that one didn't feel like a "Christian" movie, it's about more chariot races and slavery.

I liked Noah, a lot, but I'll watch anything Aronofsky does and I really enjoy that Old Testament mysticism stuff and don't get offended by a so called straying from the text. Most of that stuff in Noah was from the Book of Enoch, which was banned from the Bible. Plus, Aronofsky was a Jewish Yeshiva student, he studied the Old Testament his whole childhood.

For some reason, studios still believe remakes are the "safe" option.

You'd think after flops like Ghostbusters, Lone Ranger, and this movie, they'd stop believing that.

Studios need to go back to finding risky directors and script writers and giving them full control over there own movies.

All this studio meddling is not helping the industry.

My honest opinion when I saw this trailer was, "Why are they trying to remake Gladiator?" and that was it. And I was also laughing at Morgan in dreads.

Know why they even did that in the first place? It was profitable.

What I saw:

1. Morgan Freeman in dreads
2. Tons of CGI
3. People supposedly in Roman times speaking like modern people
4. A movie that was already in it's 2nd remake when Heston's version was made 50 years ago

Have we gone back to the Studio Era, minus the studios' outright ownership of a stable of actors who can't work for other studios?

Remakes and sequels galore and an overabundance of comic book movies speaks to zero risk taking and a crutch-like reliance on supposed "built-in audiences". It seems like, other than Aronofsky and Nolan, if a director wants to make an original non-comedic movie these days, he has to do it through a studio's "independent film" sub-company.
