In this season the final came down to 2 people instead of 3...when did they change that and why?

The original format through the first 12 seasons was a final 2 instead of a final 3. There's only been a few seasons after 13 that have had a final 2. I read somewhere that it is sometimes effected by if a player quits or is medically evacuated post merge. Could also just be another twist for the season.

Also in this season there was a "special idol" that can be played after votes are read. It didn't get used but cool idea. From here on out, without specifics or spoilers, are there more "special idols" each year?

Yeah it was the first super idol since season 13. Most fans don't like it because it just gives the owner far too much power. There are other special idols and advantages that start coming into play.

There are a few instances of the jury being very bitter. I consider Cagayan to be the real start of juries valuing game play over who they like. If Tony comes around a couple years earlier he certainly doesn't win.

PS Cagayan is tied for my favorite all newbie season with s7 Pearl Islands. Both are fantastic seasons.

Thanks. Im gonna start knocking out 16 today.

After that I'm gonna do one of the newer ones that's highly recommended in here. I can't remember specifically without going back through the thread but it was either 31 or 33 or 37 or something like that. I'm really excited for 40 with it's rave reviews but im trying to save it to let anticipation build ha

There have been a few bitter Survivor juries in recent seasons. 35 and 32 come to mind.

And of course 19 and 20 are the most notorious bitter juries.

Some other posters earlier gave a rundown ranking on their favorites. As someone who has just recently watched every season what would you rank as your top ~10 seasons? Also any broad generic reasons? Like good cast, big moves, etc.

I'm actually in a survivor discord and have been putting together a ranking of seasons that i'll really work over once i finish 40. I'll give you my top 10 currently. I think this is a great mix of incredible game play as well as entertaining casts. Each one of these seasons has a great winner and is a good mix of old school, middle school and new school.

I'd recommend watching them in order as some seasons like Micronesia, Cambodia and Blood vs Water will be more enjoyable.

1. Heroes vs Villains
2. Micronesia
3. Pearl Islands
3b. Cagayan
5. Cambodia
6. Millennials vs Gen X
7. Tocantins
8. Cook Islands
9. China
10. Blood vs Water

eta: I'm also currently watching s37 and it's great. Depending on how it shakes out I could see it moving into that top 10.

19 i agree but I don't think 20 was necessarily bitter. It's ultimately still a social game and I just think Parv and Russell were really disliked. I know Sandra said Parv lost the game when she would pull out JT's letter and mock him day in and day out even after he left. Russell of course never had a shot in hell.

The most bitter jury is definitely All Stars lol. Even the reunion was hostile and bitter.

That one and Guatemala are the first two that come to mind for me.

Caramoan has the most bitter moment I can think of in a final episode.

You could almost look at the cast photo and know that they would be bitter on the jury.

The Ponderosa video from when they were voted out was great. They got to put all the pieces together and couldn't believe what happened.

I used to love the Ponderosa videos but lately they became all about each person's journey. They were so much better when they would just show the jury interacting and discussing what actually happened each vote.

Literally the only redeeming part of that season. It's also weird how the dirtier they get some of them start getting hotter and hotter.

Where do you find the ponderosa videos? I have never seen those

You can still find some on YouTube. On the main Survivor page LINK

During the season they will post the new Ponderosa videos late Wednesday nights, once people start making their way to the jury.

There are some other random seasons on YouTube as well. Usually they get taken down though because of copyright infringement.

CBS used to have them all on their website but they're gone now. I'm not sure if they moved them to CBS All Access or if they're just gone forever.

Looks like seasons 18-21 here

More random stuff here

What is ponderosa?

It's where the jury stays after being eliminated. It's a pretty nice private resort. They film everyone's arrival and their first meal, that sort of thing. You get to see them catch up with each other outside of the game. They can be honest about who was doing what. There's also some really awkward moments occasionally. Giving people the silent treatment, stuff like that.

For a long time you could get clues as to what the jury was thinking. You could tell whether they were bitter or not. Who they were rooting for.

Now though it's turned into a reflection of the personal journey of each player.

Gotcha I didn't know that existed. Anyone ever banged in ponderosa?

Amanda from Heroes vs Villains 100% banged Ozzy after their season was over. That season they showed the Ponderosa video after the season had wrapped. They were all over each other. She eventually started giving him the frick me eyes and they went off together into the night.

(BTW not a spoiler since you mentioned you were gonna start this particular season. Jury + Finalists that season had a Ponderosa video. That's when those two hooked up)

I think the 20 jury was one of the most bitter in the show’s history. Parvati has always had a good social game, while also being a villain. Her and Russell ran circles around that cast that season, but she was guilt by association with Russell. She did have a bad final tribal arguing her case though.

Parv got the three votes from the only villains on the jury and all the heroes voted for Sandra because she was begging them the whole time to work with her but they were too stupid to do so (mostly blame JT and Candace here). I don't think there was any bitterness towards Parv. They definitely loathed Russell though. Russell being maybe one of the worst social players ever was never going to win.

In 20 russell was an annoying player and I'd hate him IRL but gosh amighty he was entertaining. I loved watching him just to see what shite he was gonna stir up next
