He was one of the top guys in Hollywood.

In 96 he tied with Cruise as the number one box office draw. He was number five for the decade.

Sure, with emphasis on "action" since that lowers the expectation of the actual acting. He was a very good fit for the movies he did.

Apocalypto might be one of the most criminally underrated movies of the last few decades.

. You wouldn't see Willis in an epic spectacle like Braveheart or The Patriot...

Not to mention The Bounty or Hamlet.

I don't think it's underrated anymore. Pretty much everyone with taste looks back on it today and says "great movie."

There are two movies that time has looked back on in completely different ways. Crash is now almost universally seen as cringe-worthy and wildly overrated at the time it came out and Apocalypto has people looking back and saying "is Gibson a crazy genius?"

He just finished production on Hacksaw Ridge a WWII piece he directed ... Solid cast and supposedly decent story so will be interesting to see if he emerges from movie jail

This made my day.

I'll be pulling for him to make a comeback

Mel was in The Expendables 3 I believe, that was pretty fun. Gibson is great in period action flicks.

Mel Gibson did it all, can't pigeon-hole him as an action star, although he excelled there as well.

Crybabies whine about a meltdown. Let em.

Its not like he was drugging women and raping them.
Besides,
What Mel accomplished during 99.8% of his career more than excuses the .2% mistakes.

He is Martin Riggs AND Max Rockitansky for frick's sweet sake.

Despite that resume of action, I never thought of Gibson as an action star.

But his films sure did draw.

He was an action star but he was a better actor and more versatile than Bruce Willis, Arnold, Stallone etc.

I don't think of him as an action star, though he made a lot of excellent action movies. Even early on he was shining in more serious films like Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously(which is a great movie for anyone who hasn't seen it.)

The Eastwood comparison earlier in the thread is on the money, though I don't think of him as an action star either.

Y'all have talked me into it. At the movies and later on premium this just struck me as a chore to watch. But its always gotten high praise around these parts.

I'm going' in.
