Yea, the entire second half of the move took a hard turn, literally if you've seen the movie. At that point it lost me.

I was fine with Bill Skarsgard's character being what he was, he also came off incredibly nervous in a situation he was actively trying to not come off "rapey" and just failing. Regardless, we watch Tess be very self-conscious about locking doors, keeping her wits about her, not drinking things, clean sheets, etc. However, instead of coming up with a clever way to progress the plot and continue to keep your character intelligent, we just have them drop all their already established traits and become idiots and make idiotic decision after idiotic decision, even after explicitly talking about how the action they end up doing is not the right decision.

The entire Justin Long story added absolutely nothing to the movie. Just an opportunity to put a message forth on rape culture and how shitty guys are. It added nothing to the actual story. Also, how many damn times can they make him drop whatever he is holding at a crucial point?

I mean, to be fair she really isn't, the homeless guy even talked about it. The old man is the true villain. the mother is just a byproduct of his evilness and knows nothing else. I get your point though.

Campbell did a wonderful job I think. She is a very underrated actress.

Hell, why didn't she just stab the mother repeatedly when she was leaving with the knife? Her back was turned. Just get her in the neck a bunch and save the dude?

Also, how in the world has nobody caught onto what was going on there? They clearly have cages and stuff where they have trapped visitors before. The mother didn't care at all about cleaning out the luggage in the house, so how has the rental company not figured out that missing people reports keep happening at this specific rental location after renters disappear and leave their luggage when the maids come by before the next renters?

Watched this today. It's a fun ride while watching. Just don't think too deeply about it after it's over. I admire any movie that tries something different these days and doesn't cater to idiots. In that respect, I appreciated the lack of backstory in the beginning, the narrative jump in the middle, and not simply spelling everything out for the audience.

I will say, though, I'm interested to know if Zach Cregger played Resident Evil 7 before writing the movie. There are so many similarities in terms of character and setting.

September was a good month for “horror.”

I found this movie scary and well done and Pearl was just great. Now I just need to see Beast

I feel like the two acts were separate movies.

The first half was a genuinely creepy and tense horror film that plays on people's very real fear of strangers and uncomfortable situations.

The second half was a campy monster movie that kind of spoofs how dumb people are in horror movies. Justin Long's character finding a murder dungeon in his basement and being more concerned with measuring it so he could list the additional square footage is just hilarious.

Overall the movie was fun and took some unexpected turns that kept me entertained. I didn't find the sexual assault accusation side plot to be preachy as his guilt is never established and it is really just a way to get him to the house.

If there was any preachy message I think it is probably more to do with the cops being so dismissive but in reality Detroit does have a huge problem with mostly abandoned neighborhoods that put a strain on police resources so there is probably some truth to that. Seriously after watching that movie I had to do some research to see if Detroit is really that bad.... it really is that bad.

This movie wasn't a masterpiece by any means but I found it to be a solid horror flick.

Streamed it yesterday. Thought it was pretty good but the hard cuts to different characters were a bit jarring and took me out of the movie.

Although when Justin Long found the hidden room and immediately started measuring and looking into if he could add the room to the houses square footage, that gave me a pretty good chuckle

I also liked the casting of the creepy house-owner in the 80s. That dude played the terrifyingly intimidating Imperial General who questioned Mando & Mayfield (Bill Burr) in Mandalorian S2 Ep7. He's a good villain character actor.

This movie is just stupid.

Why is she naked? Is she a descendant from The Descent? Why does she have superhuman strength?

I thought when they went back into the past it would be like a "Prisoners" story but then they just drop that and turn it into a monster story with zero explanation.

So some guy raped some girls in the 70s and the offspring was some The Descent creature? Movie had promise until the 2nd Act.
