Which is all that matters IMO.

By the end of its first theatrical release Avatar had grossed $749,766,139 in the U.S. and Canada, and $1,999,298,189 in other territories, for a worldwide total of $2,749,064,328.

They’re going to rerelease Avengers:Endgame and it’ll pass Avatar’s total gross anyways. Passing the original release gross is a big deal.

I know theatrical runs are shorter now even when compared to just 10 years ago, but Endgame has been in theaters for around 2 months while avatars original run was like 7 months

Endgame was boring AF. I want my comic book movies to be filled with action. This one was not.

Seems very unlikely that it will pass Avatar. Endgame re release is much too soon

It wasn’t my favorite but it wasn’t boring. I found the time travel stuff tiresome.

I really hate time travel stories. Except Quantum Leap.

Ferngully: CGI Edition should not be the highest grossing movie.

Titanic and Avatar’s totals both include rereleases so if they count, then Endgame’s total won’t be set in stone until all rereleases are done, which may not be done for years.

Do these numbers take into account differences in ticket prices over time?

No, EG isn't close to Avatar if you adjust for inflation.

Doesn’t seem like movie tickets cost more now than they did in 2008. And for Avatar, weren’t most (or all?) tickets for 3D? Which always cost more.

Box office $$$ seems fairly meaningless, then. Does the industry calculate actual tickets sold/booties in seats? That would seem to present a much more accurate picture.

Yeah, I’m willing to bet more people have seen Endgame in theaters than Avatar.

Endgame crushed the IMAX box office record, Selling almost 100 million dollars worth the first weekend

Avatar made 1.3B dollars in 3D sales.

Endgame had 540 million 3D sales in the opening weekend!
Endgame outsells Avatar in 3D tickets opening weekend

I believe the 3D ticket prices point is moot.

The biggest difference is the exchange rate in Europe really boosted the dollars for Avatar at the time.

However, Endgame had the greatest advantage. China only had 5000 theaters when Avatar released, now there are 60,000.
