Star Wars has 3 films to make it a part of pop culture. It spawned dozens of novels to continue the universe and keep the fan base going and talking until the PT. The MCU is the MCU. The characters were a part of pop culture before the MCU was created.
Avatar will become more a part of pop culture over the next 3-5 years. James Cameron didn’t write 4 more movies and start production on 2 of them if he thought no one gave a damn. And people obviously did give a damn or no one would ever mention it continuously.
The first sequel comes out next December. There will be a trailer attached with Episode 9. And you’ll find out why Disney is hitting pause on the Star Wars franchise.

There is no way 4 more Avatars get made. I will bet you anything you'd like.

I never knew Avatar had die hard apologist.
The more you know.

Ok
I expect the Avatar sequels to make money but won’t be nearly as successful as the first.

In fairness, I saw it in about a 20% full theater but it was Wednesday night past 10 and I saw the 2-D version with the 3-D version starting at more or less the same time.

I just saw it with the SO.

Oh. So not really.
Would you feel better if I said 95% - 97.5% empty
I was kind of shocked being less than a week out from opening. It was in the afternoon, but the same theater was close to sold out at the same time Tuesday and that is why I went Wednesday. Tuesday is discount day, but I still expected more than 10 people in there.

Well two more have already been completed so you may want to reconsider that.
And to lego, no shite they won’t be as successful. Even if they each only make half what the original did, you’re still looking at at least $250 million in profit at bare minimum from the box office alone. Currently only 9 movies have ever hit $1.35 billion. So i’m not really sure what you’re trying to get at.
And FWIW, I believe Endgame will set a new WW all time record and I hope it does. The real winner in all of this is Disney. They own the rights to 7 or the top 10 highest grossers of all time and 4 of the top 5.

I’m getting at the fact that no one gives a shite about Avatar
Posted on 5/4/19 at 7:49 am to biglego
And yet it is currently the highest grossing movie of all-time, has its own section in Disney World, and had its own themed Cirque de Soleil show. Not bad for something no one cares about.

And, might I add, the best fricking ride Disney has ever installed.

Will probably pass 600 mill domestic after weekend.
Posted on 5/4/19 at 8:37 am to LSU6262
That’s a guarantee at this point. The lowest projection I saw for this weekend is $145 million. Most are in the $155-$165 million range.

Early estimate is 41-42 mil yesterday. If that holds, that's lower than I expected. Saturday will need a large jump.

Yeah, I don’t get the appeal of the movie. It had some nice graphics, but that was about it.

Someone said that the initial excitement gave it a massive boost. That, the piracy, and the fact that it’s three hours may hurt with repeat viewings. I can tell you that I would not see it in theaters again, and I loved it.

First Number from 4200 theaters just under 40
Going to need a huge jump, looks like TFA second weekend record is probably safe

Let me be clear...it's a phenomenal number. I'm strictly speaking in keeping pace with The Force Awakens. IMO, breaking Avatars record is a lock. Breaking TFA domestic record will be much harder.
