Get a sequel? They’ve already filmed the third one and started filming the fourth

I actually thought the story was a lot better than the first one but I feel like that will be an unpopular opinion here

It was a good time. Would have personally trimmed the second act a lot and gotten to the whale stuff earlier, given some kind of Levity to the spider character and his decision making, and made the two sons different enough to notice. Other than that really fun time

From the early looks of it, $44M SAT for #AvatarTheWayOfWater. 2-days cume of $97M. Weekend projected to be $133-136M.

$95M SAT OS. $226M Cume. Heading for $290M weekend. #AvatarTheWayOfWater

China - $43.5M
Korea - $17.5M
France - $16.25M
GER - $14.75M
India - $12M
UK - $9.6M
MEX - $9.5M
AUS - $8M
Italy - $7M

WW opening weekend will be about 420+ good start but definitely lower than projections. And we now have an accurate budget number, per Deadline

Not a good opening weekend. Could signal the end of the large scale theater business. I'm sure a lot of people are waiting until they are off for the holidays to go see it, but those opening numbers are way off projections.

US projections were not met, but worldwide it did better than expected. They were hoping for $500 million this weekend. Deadline is projecting 434. Boxofficemojo 485. The actuals tomorrow will likely be somewhere in the middle.

It wasn’t as high as projected because everyone knows Avatar sucked and this is a CGI jerk-off fest. I’ve been saying it’s going to fall short since the beginning. I think you really see it in the drop off next weekend. It will make more money than most movies, but not what the studio or “experts” think.

It’s pretty simple. Normies DGAF about avatar in the first place. They might be interested when they see it advertised for a minute—then they hear it’s more than 3 hours long and only so so. They won’t show up in the weeks ahead like they need to in order for this to do as well as the studio hoped.

Already moving goalposts I see lol?

A week ago you said it would fail miserably and make Cameron a washed up has been.

It’s opening weekend beat the first film and the audience score is matching the first. At worst this will barely break a billion but most likely end up as the 2nd or 3rd grossing post Covid era film.

You will be on here in two years declaring this time, Avatar 3 will finally doom Cameron and no one cares…as it grosses another billion.

I stand by whatever I said. I’m sure it’s what I’ve been saying: it won’t do what people think it will. I still don’t know what it needs to make to break even, do you? It’s not just the film budget.

I also think Cameron has been washed up. I think the first avatar is terrible.

Movie is not bad..worth seeing once in theater in 3D. It was fun enough and the visuals are pretty cool.

But:

***SPOILERS***

1. It's too long
2. I genuinely disliked the fat Kate Winslett chief bitch.
3. frick Spider and the whole Spider storyline. Tarzan underwater in space, frick off, film.
4. Unobtanium was replaced by something even dumber. Magical bullshite goo that stops the aging process, just stops it, only found in Pandora space whales. frick off, film.
5. The stupid hissing thing, just stop. frick off, Navi hiss thing.
6. I like the movie better the first time, when it was Titanic, or Free Willy 2.

No one outside the studio and team will know the exact break even number. Probably never will.

We know the budget was around 350-450 million(which might include a bunch of part 3 too, which principal filming is done), and they probably spent 100 to 200+ mil on marketing. Jim’s cut is probably around 15% like the last film(he reportedly made around 350 million), so rough estimate is that if the movie makes around 800-900 million I’d think Disney will be alright. Especially when part 3 is in the can and just needing VFX(which tbf will be probably cost over 100 mil).

If both films break a billion I think Disney will have no problem green-lighting part 4 and 5. And your predictions of James Cameron’s demise will need to be moved back quite a bit.

Cameron apparently told Disney and 20th Century Studios executives that his sequel budget was so high it represented “the worst business case in movie history.”

According to the director’s estimates, “you have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history. That’s your threshold. That’s your break even.”

Good grief this. Watched it this evening with the wife and I was ready to leave at least 45 minutes before it finally ended. They drag out the ending far too long for no reason whatsoever.
